Blue Bird morning in Nozawa Onsen. After days of bucketing snow the Sun has finally emerged and looking amazing
There was 20cm of fresh up top overnight and with all the Holiday Crowd going home this could be the best day of the season so far
This photo was taken from one of the rooms at Villa Nozawa and shows the awesome views across the Valley. You can see a few of the nearby resorts from Nozawa Onsen
There are a number of decent resorts just a short drive from here including;
Togari Onsen – a small resort just across the Valley, it is lower than Nozawa so tends to have a shorter season but there is some great back country to explore
Kijimadaira – boasting one of the steepest runs in Japan and also credited with being the birth place of both snowboarding and paragliding in Japan this is not a huge place but can be interesting
Madarao Kogen – is a larger resort with 440 m of Vertical and 17 lifts it was pretty popular back in the hey days of early 90’s. It is pretty quiet now and dominated by a big hotel but still worth a look
Myoko Kogen – this is a larger collection of resorts 9 in total and gets a lot of snow. Suginohara and Akakura are the most popular
Shiga Kogen is also only about a 1 hour drive and is a massive area with a number of resorts and some great terrain
Having said this most people find that Nozawa Onsen resort just 100m above the Lodges has plenty to explore and enjoy on their stay here. Nozawa has an impressive 1085 meters of Vertical and over 700 acres of terrain. With some great on and off piste runs, two gondolas and 23 chair lifts.
