Weather; Light snow

Light snowfalls have continue without respite overnight in Nozawa Onsen, as a result we have recorded some decent totals since the close of lifts yesterday. 10cm was recorded up top, 15cm across the mid mountain and 5cm at village level. At the moment conditions are overcast with occasional flurries and cold temperatures across the mountain. We expect visibility to improve later in the day with a partly cloudy afternoon on the cards.

Conditions will be excellent across the whole mountain. Groomers will be fast with a nice dusty powder layer and the trees will have plenty of fresh powder on offer. Most areas of the upper mountain have filled in nicely and there are now far fewer exposed bushes.

Yesterday saw cold conditions later in the day with an improvement in snow conditions. The visibility stayed marginal across most of the mountain all day limiting the quality skiing to inside the trees.

According to the forecast further light snow is expected tomorrow, then clearing for tuesday. Wednesday should see the impact of a pre-frontal southerly airstream which are set to increase the freezing level to around 1000m. Following that a strong frontal system will move across Japan Thursday dropping heavy snow which will continue into Friday in the current forecast. This is subject to revisions over the coming days.

Base up top: 200 cm    Temp Top; -4 Degrees

Base at bottom; 85 cm

New Snow since close: 1 cm

Weather; Light snow

This morning in Nozawa we have some light snow falling across the resort. Although quite wet at the moment, temperatures are set to drop to around sea level seeing an improvement in the snow quality later in the afternoon.

Visibility is limited on the top half of the mountain and winds are gusting moderate at the summit. Best skiing today will be tree lined groomers in the morning transitioning to the upper trees as snow accumulates during the afternoon.

Yesterday was an excellent day on the hill, especially in the morning where cold temperatures and blue sky persisted. Combined with the deep powder from recent falls there was some outstanding off piste runs on offer. During the afternoon temperatures and sun created very heavy snow below 1000m, but up high the quality was still good.

Holiday crowds meant the were big lines in parts although thankfully these crowds will disperse after the weekend, as the Japanese holidays have officially finished.

Looking at the forecast ahead, light snow should continue today before clearing tomorrow. Monday should see further flurries before another solid dump expected for Thursday next week. Although this is subject to revisions as the date draws closer.

Overnight Dumpage

Base up top: 200 cm    Temp Top; -5 Degrees

Base at bottom; 75 cm

New Snow since close: 20 cm

Weather; Heavy snow

Its dumping in Nozawa Onsen! The heavily anticipated first flakes began to fall late yesterday afternoon and increased into the night. We have had 20cm fall up top and 15cm in the village, although these readings were taken at 7am, its likely that twice as much has fallen since then. Temperatures are colder than yesterday with a freezing level of around 600m. Winds are strong across the mountain so be prepared for very cold windchill and wind hold on some lifts.

Seek out tree lined runs for protection from the winds and improved visibility in the fog, its certain that there will be some sweet powder stashes amongst the trees, especially the upper half of the mountain. If its cruisy groomed runs your after the lower areas will be the pick, as they are below the cloud line.

There were more than a few sore heads yesterday morning although those who made the effort to get up were rewarded with some nice runs down the groomers. The upper trees were nice also but well tracked. Lower un-groomed runs suffered with warmer than expected temperatures.

The forecast suggests moderate to heavy falls should continue this morning before gradually abating into the afternoon. Winds should decrease into the afternoon also. Tomorrow should be an epic day with deep freshies and clear skies. Further moderate falls are expected to move across the region tomorrow night. Following that, more snow is expected next Monday.

Skiing into the new year in Nozawa Onsen.

Skiing into the new year in Nozawa Onsen.

Base up top: 180 cm    Temp Top; -3 Degrees

Base at bottom; 60 cm

New Snow since close: 0 cm

Weather; Overcast

For the first day of the year we have overcast skies and no new snow to report. It seems that the system expected to arrive overnight is slightly delayed. Snow should start to fall later today and continue into tomorrow. Temperatures are relatively warm at the moment, but should cool quickly later today and the best skiing should be the groomed runs, with off piste being variable with a surface crust.

Yesterday was a nice day for the groomers and off piste up high. Crowds were better than expected with the longest lift lines being no more than a few minutes. There were a quite a few people in town to witness the spectacles of the new year in Nozawa Onsen.

Looking at the forecast ahead, we expect the next system to move through Friday/Sat delivering more snow before another stronger and cooler front moves across the region on Sunday.

Light snow for the last day of 2013

Base up top: 190 cm    Temp Top; -6 Degrees

Base at bottom; 70 cm

New Snow since close: 5 cm

Weather; Overcast

Five centimetres of fresh has been recorded overnight in Nozawa Onsen. We currently have overcast conditions above the village and temperatures are cool at the summit, warmer down low.

Best areas of the resort will be the upper half if your hunting some fresh or throughout all groomers if your just cruising. If the village last night was any indication then the slopes will be busy today so pick your skiing areas carefully. New Year and the fire festival are the two busiest times in Nozawa Onsen.

Yesterday was a nice day with the clear weather although the off piste snow suffered down low with the warm conditions, becoming heavy. That being said, the snow remained in top notch condition in the Yamabiko area.

We still expect a moderate dump of snow starting early tomorrow morning and continuing over the next few days. Heaviest falls will occur tomorrow, but the best skiing will be had Thursday with colder temps and lighter winds.
