The base has cracked the four meter mark in style overnight here in Nozawa Onsen with 30cm of fresh pow falling since last lifts yesterday.
Early birds and weekend warriors were out in force this morning lapping the trees and ungroomed pistes with gigantic smiles on their faces; conditions are obviously very good. We even have sun breaking through the clouds with excellent visibility and light winds. Do yourself a favor and get up there if you can!
Yesterday was yet another perfect day. We saw sun and very light crowds persist all day long. It was a great day for exploring the shaded gullies with very inviting visibility and a relatively stable snowpack. The best places for skiing in the afternoon were the north facing slopes as the southern faces were exposed to the strong late winter sun, dramatically altering the snowpack.
It looks like we should expect further snow showers to pass across the region later today and tonight, probably produce more fresh tracks tomorrow morning. We should see some strong winds and moderate snows last the day on Sunday. Hopefully the winds will not be too strong to shut lifts because if not the riding will be excellent.
On Monday light snow showers should continue till around the afternoon before a clearing trend commences. Tuesday should be a beautiful clear picture perfect day.

The good days keep rolling on here in Nozawa Onsen. We have a partly cloudy bluebird day with a fresh top up of powder; looks like it will be another perfect day to get up the hill for a ride. The trees and ungroomed runs will be best early. Once these have become tracked out head for the groomers or your favorite secret tree run to score yet more fresh pow.
We should expect snow showers to move across the region once more this afternoon. Tonight we expect a substantial dump to occur. Woohoo!
Yesterday was one of the days of the season in Nozawa. Super dry deep powder was on offer through the morning; most places were at least waist deep. Light winds and good visibility made riding extremely enjoyable. To top it all off crowds were not an issue whatsoever.
In the afternoon the sun made an appearance and the powder began to settle improving accessibility for some areas. South facing slopes exposed to the afternoon sun became heavy but shaded gullies remained epic.
We are about halfway through this extended snowfall period. As alluded to earlier we expect a very solid dump to occur tonight. Based on current weather model predictions we could see at least 30cm fall off a moist NW airstream, probably more. Light snow will continue on Saturday before another period of moderate to heavy snowfalls on Sunday. We also should see some stronger winds during this time. Clear weather should return by Tuesday.

Looks like we have had some classic Japow overnight here in Nozawa Onsen. Since last lifts yesterday we have had over 30cm fall across the resort and it’s still falling as of 730am. Looks like today is going to be one of those days to be up there.
Yesterday was an unusual day in Nozawa. We had beautiful blue sky in the morning, hardly a cloud in the sky. This continued until about 2pm when intense snow showers appeared almost out of know where and quickly engulfed the resort. Strong wind gusts were recorded along with a dramatic temperature drop; a classic frontal system.
The snow quality on offer yesterday was simply excellent and the distinct lack of crowds meant it was relatively easy to find untracked powder fields all day long. An almost perfect winter’s day for skiing and boarding in Nozawa Onsen overall.
According to the current model predictions we should expect light snow to continue for the rest of today. Tomorrow we should see snow showers and occasional periods of blue sky pass across the mountains before intensifying heavy snows move over Nozawa on Friday night. This should produce the goods with excellent conditions expected on Saturday morning. Sunday should see another bout of heavy snows adding to the accumulated total for this extended period of winter weather. We still don’t expect a clearing trend to occur around Tuesday next week.
A bit of a surprise bluebird day here in Nozawa Onsen. Combined with 10cm of overnight falls across the resort and small weekday crowds it should be an excellent day for skiing and boarding. We do expect snow showers to move across the region once again anytime soon so make the most of the conditions whilst they last.
Very cold overnight temperatures mean the snow will be to notch when it comes to quality and the groomed runs will be fast early.
Yesterday was a nice day on the hill. We saw light snow flurries continue all day. Up top early saw the prime conditions before becoming tracked out. The lower half of the mountain was dust on crust skiing with an icy base so the top half was definitely the place to be.
Tomorrow we should see snow showers continue. In fact, consistent snow showers and cold temperatures are set to continue until Monday next week based on the current forecast. Snowfall amounts have been downgraded somewhat overnight. We now expect persistent light to moderate falls with no heavy spikes in precipitation rates expected across the forecast period.

At the moment we have some light snow flurries and light winds here in Nozawa Onsen. Testing the conditions out this morning we have some fun riding on offer at the top area of the mountain. There is about 10-15cm of fresh and the base layer isn’t too icy either; at least in the Yamabiko area. As you ride to the lower half you will notice there are decreasing amounts of fresh and it is quite icy as well. Therefore it is best to stick to the top half today.
Visibility is variable as clouds move over the peak. At times ok, otherwise poor. There are some fantastic ice coated trees across the mountain, worthwhile taking the camera to capture the spectacle.
Unfortunately yesterday morning’s snow showers did not last, turning to rain at about 1pm. Thankfully the top half escaped being hit with the liquid snow so damage is limited to down low. The poor conditions forced most people indoors so the slopes were very un-crowded. It was still a fun day for those who made the effort to stay out.
The snow forecast continues to impress. We expect snow showers to continue today and the next day and the next day and so on… All in all we expect cold temps snow showers of varying intensity to last until next Tuesday. Heavier dumps are expected tomorrow, Friday night and Sunday night. It looks like a perfect Japanese winter weather pattern has really set in.
