The morning after

Standard view across the mountain yesterday.

Base up top: 340cm        Temp Top; -15 Degrees

Base at bottom: 195cm

New Snow since close: 15cm

Wow, what a day it was yesterday! We had some of the deepest powder of the season as heavy snowfalls continued all day. Even with the holiday crowds (which thinned out in the afternoon) it was still possible to find fresh tracks through the trees all day. Areas which were tracked in the morning quickly filled in with fresh snow and within hours up for grabs again. It’s safe to say that yesterday was one of the best days of the season so far.

Yesterday also saw some of the most unstable conditions this year, with slides occurring on even more moderate slopes. Many areas were simply too dangerous too ski, even with the necessary gear and experience, especially the backcountry. One skier broke an avalanche on a side country run which resulted in serious injuries. It is better to avoid certain areas on days like yesterday and live to ski another day.

Today it looks like the snow clouds have moved on for the time being at least. Snow continued well after last lifts yesterday adding 15cm of cover; there should be more than a few very deep fresh tracks on offer today.

The total snowfall from this storm is now 80cm and avalanche conditions remain very high. Long weekend crowds moved on yesterday afternoon so the mountain will feel very quite indeed.

As the forecast stands, we should see further snowfalls tonight and tomorrow morning before a partly cloudy day on Thursday. Friday should see building snow showers and another solid dump is looking likely on Friday night into Saturday.

Enjoy your day.

Monday Madness

Exploration rewards

Base up top: 310cm        Temp Top; -9 Degrees

Base at bottom: 155cm

New Snow since close: 20cm

This morning we are greeted with heavy snow and at least 20cm of fresh powder in Nozawa Onsen. Woohoo! Its going to be a good day.

Yesterday was the most crowded day of the season so far, but the holiday vibe on the mountain made up for the crowds. The Gondola and Yamabiko were the busiest sections, especially in the morning. However it was still possible to escape the crowds and venture to the less known areas of the resort.

It was a sunny and partly cloudy day yesterday; a good day for exploring new runs. The snow remained in great shape thanks to cold temperatures.

Avalanche risk is higher than normal but improving.

We expect heavy snow to continue for the until this afternoon accompanied by fresh NW winds. Tomorrow should see mixed conditions; partly cloudy early grading to snow showers during the afternoon. Wednesday should see similar conditions before clearing to fine weather on Thursday. On the long range forecast another big dump is possible next weekend.

Sunny Sunday

by Mark on February 10, 2013

Its been dumping in Nozawa Onsen the past couple of days.

Base up top: 290cm        Temp Top; -13 Degrees

Base at bottom: 155cm

New Snow since close: 0cm

The good days keep rolling on here in Nozawa Onsen. Snow from the dump over the last few days is still in excellent quality thanks to persisting cold temperatures, and if you know where to look there are fresh tracks on offer. Should be another good days riding.

It’s partly cloudy at the moment, but we expect clouds and snow showers to return by the afternoon. High crowd levels this long weekend are causing some lift lines.

Yesterday was an epic day, hardly a frown on the hill. Deep fresh powder was on offer through the trees. The snow was so deep that some of the classic tree runs around Yamabiko were not steep enough to maintain forward momentum. That icy base layer which has been hanging around is now less of a concern, gradually getting buried.

The forecast is still looking good. As usual the snow expected tonight has been pushed back a little. We now expect the heaviest period of snowfalls to occur on Monday morning and last all day. Following that light snow showers should continue till Wednesday when we expect clear skies to return. All in all a good weeks snowfall is predicted.

Dumping!

by Mark on February 8, 2013

A perfect snowy field near Nozawa summit.

Base up top: 270cm        Temp Top; -11 Degrees

Base at bottom: 140cm

New Snow since close: 2cm

It’s absolutely dumping in Nozawa Onsen this morning! The heavy flakes started at about 7am and since then about 5-10cm has gathered on the lodge railing. Its looks like this weather has really set in and snowfalls are forecast to continue for the rest of the day, along with extremely cold temperatures. A couple of strong wind gusts even down in the village means that some lifts may go on wind hold, especially higher up.

Yesterday was another nice day on the mountain. There were many powder stashes on offer around Yamabiko thanks to windblown snow being deposited on the leeward side of the summit ridge. Quality was very nice, light and dry on a crusty base. Death cookies which have been a problem off piste recently are gradually becoming buried.

It is a long weekend this weekend for the Chinese New Year so crowd levels will be higher than usual about the slopes. Get up for first lifts to avoid the usual gondola lines that occur on public holidays.

This weekend we should see some significant snowfalls. Snow should continue for the rest of the day, grading to snow showers overnight and tomorrow. Sunday looks to be a big day of snowfalls, especially overnight. During Sunday night 30cm or more is looking likely at this stage.

Cold Clear Winters Day

by Mark on February 7, 2013

Throwing some spray for the cameras.

Base up top: 270cm        Temp Top; -7 Degrees

Base at bottom: 150cm

New Snow since close: 0cm

We have a classic clear winter’s day here in Nozawa Onsen. Cold temperatures across the resort, plentiful  Japan powder, high winds aloft and perfectly groomed corduroy. Today will be a very good day for skiing and boarding.

There is still plenty of light dry powder on offer after yesterday. Although it hasn’t snowed overnight, strong winds in the higher reaches of the resort have blown fresh snow to cover most tracks, especially in the gullies. There are also a few windblown natural features up high to slash or jump.

Yesterday was an excellent day on the mountain. Light snow intensified and by mid morning it was dumping classic Japanese style thick flakes. The riding was good early but improved even further thanks to the persistent flakes. By about 3pm a clearing trend set in and snowfalls gradually eased off becoming clear by the evening. Like today, crowds on the mountain were very small.

The forecast for the next week looks good. We expect clear weather for most of the morning before some high cloud marches across the sky during the afternoon. Snow showers are a looking likely overnight and tomorrow we should see snow and strong winds continue. On Saturday there should still be a few snow showers about, but also the possibility on some sun. Heavy snowfalls are a distinct possibility on Sunday evening and Monday at this stage.

Waiting to drop in..
