The snow monkeys are well worth a visit on a non ski day

Base up top:  250cm        Temp Top;  -2 Degrees

Base at bottom;  140cm

New Snow since close: 5cm

Weather; Clear, sunny, light winds

After brief snow flurries yesterday afternoon we woke to a clear full blue day here in Nozawa Onsen and a brilliant alpenglow shining on the mountains across the valley. Currently there is no wind to speak of and not a cloud in the sky, perfect!

It looks like the variable weather forecast for today will not eventuate. Likely blue skies and sun will remain for the day, perhaps with a couple of clouds moving in from the west later in the afternoon. Today should be warmer than the past couple of days with a freeze level sitting around 500m above sea level, higher in the sun.

There is a bit of a cloud sea in the valleys this morning so up high should offer a very nice backdrop to lay down a few turns.

With an absence of significant fresh snow falls recently, many of the piste runs have worked themselves into hard moguls and there are reports of a crust layer that has formed in the snowpack. So the quality of snow is not quite as good as we have had recently.

The weather tomorrow should be very similar to today with sunny conditions prevailing for most of the day before clouds move in during the afternoon. Wednesday and Thursday should see a return to snowfalls and the freeze levels should drop to below sea level once again.

Time to get out there for a ride. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Increasing Snow

Distant mountain

New Snow since close:  0cm
Weather; Snow

A return to snowy conditions here in this morning in Nozawa Onsen. After a spectacular clear starry night a cloud front moved in around breakfast and we are currently experiencing some light snow which should continue for the rest of the day.

There are still quite a few fresh tracks to be found around the resort if you know where to look and the skiing is excellent in all areas of the resort.

Yesterdays partly cloudy blue skies and light winds prevailed throughout the afternoon. Cold temperatures ensured the snow remained in top quality even with the sun.

Current forecast suggests tomorrow we should see a mixed bag in terms with snow showers and possibly even a bit of sun across the resort. The following day should deliver similar conditions.

Postcard Perfect

Powder lines yesterday

Base up top:  275cm        Temp Top;  -12 Degrees

Base at bottom;  160cm

New Snow since close:  35cm

Weather; Clear

Get the cameras out we have an absolute stunner here it Nozawa Onsen this morning! Light snow flurries continued overnight giving a minor top up to the cover. However the dawn saw the clouds part and give way to sun and perfect blue skies. This is one of those days to remember with plentiful deep snow, minimal wind and excellent visibility

Yesterday saw continued moderate to occasionally heavy snowfalls but the extremely flat light made skiing outside the trees challenging, especially up high. Off piste chokingly deep powder limited skiing to steep areas with many riders became bogged down on the more moderate slopes. However snow quality was just about as good as it gets.

Current forecast suggests a return to snow showers tomorrow before a period of variable weather the following few days.

Nozawa Delivers

by Mark on January 4, 2013

Dude wheres my car?

Base up top:  275cm        Temp Top;  -10 Degrees

Base at bottom;  170cm

New Snow since close:  60cm

Weather; Moderate snow

After yesterdays dump the snow has continued overnight delivering an additional 60cm of powder, much to the delight of punters. This sorely needed top up has returned Nozawa Onsen to the magical winter wonderland that we all know and love, with seemingly limitless fresh lines and many buried cars.

At the moment in Nozawa we have cold temperatures and continued snow falls albeit at a lesser intensity in comparison with the last 36 hours. There is also a bit of wind about today, but it is by no means strong.

The Japanese new years holiday has finished and with most of the Japanese guest returning home the resort is markedly quieter. There should be few lift lines on the mountain today!

Snow showers should continue for the rest of the day before a return to clear weather. It should be a brilliant day on the mountain tomorrow with clear sunny weather, cold temps and very light winds forecast.

Looking further ahead, we should see some more snow showers passing through the region on sunday.

A return to winter in Nozawa Onsen

Holiday crowds in Nozawa Onsen

Base up top: 215 cm        Temp Top; -7 Degrees

Base at bottom; 105 cm

New Snow since close: 50 cm

Weather; Dumping

Epic conditions this morning are only improving with consistent heavy snowfalls and 50cm of overnight. After a bit of a snow drought everyone was keen to get up for first lifts this morning and those who did certainly scored!

It was an interesting morning yesterday. The warm conditions gave way to a cold front which moved over the region in the afternoon.

Since then the snow has been dumping non-stop which has seen a major improvement to the piste courses, although off-piste still needs a little more.

The forecast suggests cold conditions will remain over the next couple of days and snow will continue tomorrow before a return to clear weather on the weekend. Judging by previous years in Nozawa it is certain that the clear weather will not last long.

The dump begins. Yesterday afternoon in Nozawa.
