Time for a cool change in Nozawa Onsen

Mornng glory in Nozawa Onsen looking across to Togari Resort.

Base up top: 170 cm Temp Top; -3 Degrees
Base at bottom; 75 cm
New Snow since close: 1 cm
Weather; Sunny clouds rolling in

Clear skies last night gave way to a few snow flurries this morning with just a centimeter freshening up the cover up top.

The clouds soon cleared and now we have had some sun making an appearance so it looks like a beautiful day for riding and the groomers will be in fine form to lay down a few carves as they soften up in the sun. It has been a bit icy in the mornings lately though.

Everyone around town is looking forward to a fresh dump of snow and the forecast looks promising. The temperature is forecast to drop over the next couple of days with a freezing level below sea level.

Classic Nozawan house ready for the next dump.

We would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year from Nozawa Onsen. Hope that the powder is deep and you have good times ahead wherever you are. Thanks to everyone who has been up to visit us or making the journey.

Not a bad looking first day of the year here with fairly clear skies. Could see the moon still shining bright at about 6am this morning. Last night was lots of fun in town and lots of people came out to celebrate.

Yesterday on the slopes was a bit icy in places so we are ready for some more snow now. Think a few New Year wishes went out so we should be receiving soon!

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly in Nozawa

by Mark on December 31, 2012

The Nagasaka slopes in Nozawa this morning. A few people about. Shoudl be more tonight to bring in teh New Year with the Fireworks

Base up top: 190 cm        Temp Top; -4 Degrees

Base at bottom; 95 cm

New Snow since close: 10 cm

Weather; Varied

Woke up to snow falling lightly in the Village this morning. Not sure what time it started but we got 10cm out if it up top. Nice change after the rain we got hit with yesterday.

The sun is shooting thru now so should shape up to a pretty reasonable day on the slopes. Yesterday the snow was good up top but a bit heavy going on the lower slopes.

The New Year crowd is in town but not as bad as previous years. Was at the Gondola at 11am and only a really short line and was flowing well.

Anyway get your dancing shoes on for tonight and look forward to seeing you on the slopes at Nagasaka or by the temple to bring in the New Year in Nozawa.

Himecho Karaoke Bar in Nozawa friendly staff, cold beer and maybe good tunes! Kimiko the mama san has been serving us with a smile for over 20 years now. Hasn’t changed a bit!

Last clear skies in Nozawa for a while

by Mark on December 30, 2012

In Japan they call this ocean cloud affect ” Un Kai ” in German “Nebel Meer” not sure what they say in English but it is beautiful to see. Photo by Robert Leck

Base up top: 190 cm        Temp Top; 3 Degrees

Base at bottom; 110 cm

New Snow since close: 0 cm

Weather; Cloudy

Has been a pretty warm night in Nozawa, didn’t need to rug up too much heading for the nightly Onsen.

Was a beautiful day on the slopes yesterday with the great vistas above the clouds and sunny on the higher slopes. Snow conditions were great up high too but a bit heavy down lower.

Pretty cloudy today and looks like they should be snow clouds with the temps dropping. Getting down to 0 degrees at Sea Level by tomorrow night.  We may not see the sun again until next Saturday. Should keep the powder hounds happy!

Tomorrow is the last day of the year and there will be night skiing and festivities on the Nagasaka Slopes under the Gondola with Fireworks and more. If prefer a more traditional way to bring in the new year then head up to the Temple area for the ringing of the bell.

We got some new powder Jones boards in to the rental shop for this season. They are waxed and ready for the next dump. Come and check them out

Saturday Night Fever in Nozawa

by Mark on December 29, 2012

Karaoke time in Himecho Nozawa. Some of Japan’s top free style skiers call Nozawa home. Kicking back after a photo shoot in the great conditions over the past days

Base up top: 200 cm        Temp Top; 3 Degrees

Base at bottom; 100 cm

New Snow since close: 15 cm

Weather; Sunny up top with a cloud layer

As expected a bit of a spike in the temperature today with warmer air and sunshine up top.Had another surprise snow fall last night with 15cm gracing the upper slopes. Should make for great conditions up top but a bit heavy going down below.

There is a bit of motion about town today with the New Year crowd starting to roll in. Most of the town is now fully booked for the New Year period so should be a great vibe in town over the next few days. Will also be a bit of a change of speed on the slopes have had it pretty much like a private resort up until now.

Temperatures are due to start dropping tomorrow then the snow show should continue into the New Year with lots of festivities on and off the slopes.

Heads up! It snows alot in Nozawa Onsen
