Top 5 Reasons To Ski In Japan

Check out this great article from the Sydney Morning Herald on the Top Five Reasons to Ski In Japan.

We proudly own and operate 4 fantastic accommodation properties in Nozawa Onsen!

Over the next few weeks we’ll be updating so if you’re looking to ski Japan then you won’t find a better deal!

Nozawa Onsen must be one of the only temples around with a snow blower!

Base up top: 380 cm                  Temperature; 0 Degrees

Base at bottom; 265 cm

New Snow: 20 cm                           Weather; Snowing

Almost time to clear the driveway again in Nozawa today. Has been snowing pretty heavy most of the morning with some big flakes floating from the sky. There were some pretty excited people around the breakfast table this morning as the snow started to accumulate.

Yesterday was almost 2 different mountains top and bottom. With the temps a bit marginal down low was a bit slushy but up top was good. The mercury has shrunk down below zero now so should be nice conditions all over.

Last night was pretty special in town with the Lantern and Snowman festival there were some beautiful scenes at every corner and the kids were having a ball. Good vibe around the village too but most should leave later today.

Ahead we the snow should lighten but continue into tomorrow then a bluebird day on Tuesday. Life in snow motion continues..

March is just a few short days away and with the base at 380cm it is looking like should be good. Have good crew that have signed up to Live the Dream for a month of fun over March and April. The first 2 weeks of March are now pretty full but anyone keen for after that drop us a mail and join in for what should be a great time.

Live the Dream

Special for anytime March and April

• 30 Nights Stay based on Share room

• Healthy Breakfast Included Daily

• Unlimited Days Lift Passes (Season Pass for March and April)

• Use of Village run Hot Springs

All just 125,000 yen per person
(So around $1500 at current rates so just $50 a day for great Accommodation, Breakfast, Lift Pass and lots of Fun)
• Twin/Double Room just 150,000 Yen per person

March is still our favourite time in the Mountains with all that base usually around 3 meters plus and still some amazing powder days and so quiet it is like a private ski resort!

Stay on course in Nozawa Onsen

by Mark on February 25, 2012

Out of bounds in Nozawa Onsen can be beautiful but dangerous - enter at own risk!

Base up top: 365 cm                  Temperature; 0 Degrees

Base at bottom; 250 cm

New Snow: 9 cm                           Weather; Snowing

The snow and winter vibe has returned to Nozawa today. Still not super cold and not heavy but heard snow sliding of my roof in the early hours of this morning, always nice to hear.

Up on the slopes looks like 10cm has been deposited so far and set to snow a bit over the next few days with the temps dropping.

Was an eventful evening last night with 4 skiers lost up on the mountain after dark. Two different groups, fortunately all were found eventually, the last one just before midnight. Lucky for them they had a few things on their side. No new snow had fallen so could find their tracks, it was a warmer night than usual and they had a few handy tools at their disposal.

One group had an iphone and was able to use GPS to notify us of their location. The other guy by himself had a compass with him. Even with these they would have been looking at a long cold night if it were not for the fast and efficient rescue work of the ski patrol, groomer drivers and resort management. It not only took up a lot of their time it also put them in a dangerous situation.

It serves as a good warning to anyone trying to be a bit adventurous, it is very unpredictable outside the resort boundary, and it could have been serious. Ski with in your limits, know where you are, it can be pretty cold and lonely once the sun sets so please exercise some common sense and stay in the resort area.

The lost souls will be up for a pretty hefty rescue bill but it could have cost them a lot more. They are stoked to have made it to a warm bed and very grateful for all the assistance.

Would Cup Mogul Champion and Nozawa Local - Ueno Osamu flying the flag!

Things to do in Nozawa Onsen if not skiing!

by Mark on February 23, 2012

Take a look at Nozwa from a different perspective! by Gab Sutter

Base up top: 380 cm                  Temperature; +6 Degrees

Base at bottom; 260 cm

New Snow: 0 cm                           Weather; Overcast

Not a real inspiring day outside. Pretty overcast and we got hit by some rain too. Lots of the gang have headed up and have not seen anyone come back yet so must not be too bad up there. But if you are looking for a day off then today is probably as good as any. The Nagasaka Gondola was closed for a little while too with high winds but is up again now.

Yesterday in comparison was a beautiful day with loads of sunshine and some great conditions especially up high. As reported yesterday in the Village it was warm and the snow melting a bit.

Good news is temps are still set to drop and some snow should start to roll in from later today all going well. On the forecast the amount of snow expected from Friday night on has been pumped up a bit to and may get up to 30cm out of it. Freezing level should also drop to below sea level by Sunday night as well

The other good new is that in Nozawa Onsen there is still some cool things to do on a not so perfect day

  • Hit an Onsen, there are 13 free ones in town. If you do all of them you can get a free bandana from the Tourist Office
  • There are 2 museums in town. The Ski museum and the Cultural Museum both well worth a look
  •  Grab a toboggan and do a restaurant crawl over the resort. Always fun but take it easy  on the grape and grain
  • Cross country ski or snowshoe. Nice to see the mountains at a different speed!
  • Relax take a walk and enjoy one of the 30 restaurants, bars and cafes that Nozawa Onsen has to offer
Check out this nice little write up from a crew that passed thru a few weeks ago to make the new Nozawa Promo clip. Look forward to it if this is anything to go by

Snowshoeing in Nozawa is more exciting than you think! We have a bunch at the Lodge

Spring like day in Nozawa

by Mark on February 22, 2012

Utopia Mogul field in Nozawa Onsen. Great to sit at the cafe at the bottom and watch people cascade down the slope!

Base up top: 395 cm                  Temperature; +2 Degrees

Base at bottom; 270 cm

New Snow: 0 cm                           Weather; Sunshine

A bit of spring in our step in Nozawa Onsen today, at village level anyway it is a pretty warm one.

Up high is still really nice with blue skies and good quality snow under feet. In the Village we are enjoying this sun and warmer weather, means a nice break from the constant shoveling we had earlier. I know the powder hounds are getting hungry though!

Always a sure sign when you see them making kickers around the place. Some set up one yesterday, jumping over the cat track getting some amazing air.

Temps are still warm tomorrow then should drop off and bring some snow in on Friday night and then a few other top ups after that with scatterings of sunshine.

Funny but we had this little warm spell around the same time last season in February, but it was soon replaced with the Winter cold in early March.

Always an Adventurous walk home from School in Nozawa

Quiet day on the slopes in Nozawa Onsen

by Mark on February 21, 2012

Nozawa has some amazing Susets. Check out that snow bank on the right compared to the guy walking to the Onsen. Photo by Gabriel Sutter. Thanks Gab

Base up top: 395 cm                  Temperature; -2 Degrees

Base at bottom; 280 cm

New Snow: 0 cm

The day started off like yesterday with a bit of sun and some scattered cloud. With no wind was a beautiful morning. Around lunchtime some darkish storm clouds have engulfed the resort and even a little bit of very light snow is falling down low.

Can’t see what is going on up top with the cloud cover but reports were it was really nice on the groomers early and still some powder stashes around the place.

Yesterday was magic all day and the fine weather skiers were in their element. More sun expected for tomorrow too and very quiet on the slopes, lift lines are non existent.

A bit of precipitation building for Thursday now so lets hope it is the good kind!

On the agenda we have the tour to the Snow Monkeys tomorrow Wednesday and then again on Saturday. Soba making and eating night on Thursday. A few people off to Hamcho Sushi tonight. But better get in early as they can only seat about 15! Very cool intimate dining experience for anyone that loves thier sushi.

Kiku a master of the knife and gituar, great fisherman, chef and all round great guy. Slicing up some sashimi for the hungry skiers.
