For anyone that has taken a walk around the temples at Nozawa Onsen you would have been just as impressed by the amazing Pine Trees or Sugi as they are known that stand guard on all sides.
They are huge and have probably been growing there as long or longer than the temples which date back over 300 Years ago and are Heritage listed.
Snowing lightly in Nozawa Onsen looks like about 10cm has collected and given a nice dusting. The forecast is for heavy snow from Friday night. March is delivering on the snow front as usual!
Water flows everywhere in Nozawa it is the heart of the Village
Nozawa Onsen enjoying some sunshine for the March Long Weekend
After the good dump of snow last week the sun came out on Nozawa Onsen for the long weekend. Unfortunately guest numbers were down compared to the usual long weekend but those that were here enjoyed some decent conditions.
Good news they have managed to get the lower half of the Nagasaka Gondola up and running atleast to the mid station. Unfortunately the top half and Yamabiko Lifts are still not in operation and it is doubtful they will be this season. However I am confident they will be all back in full mode for the start of next season.
The following lifts are in operation for the weekend

Firstly apologies that we have not posted for a few days, has been a challenging time for all in Japan over the last week. We would like to sincerely thank everyone for their messages and well wishes it has meant a lot to us and the people of Nozawa. As we stated before Nozawa Onsen was not badly affected by the earthquake with no serious injuries but there was some damage to the higher lifts and buildings. At this stage we have also had no direct impact from the tsunami or the Nuclear Reactors in Fukushima north of Tokyo.
Understandably most people due to come up have chosen to postpone their visit. With the uncertainty of everything at the moment we have also decided to leave Japan for now with the family. Anyone still keen to come up please let us know and we will arrange accommodation for you. We suggest however it is best to comply with any day to day requests for cooperation from Government, other agencies and our community.
On the snow front it was snowing heavily in Nozawa the last few days with over 60cm of fresh snow falling. Ironically the base is the best it has been all season with an amazing 380cm. Most of the lifts are operating except for the top area and there will be some good conditions.
The heavy snow and cold has however also made the rescue mission in the North more difficult. At this time our thoughts and prayers are with all the people up in the affected areas of Tohoku to the North of Tokyo. For many their homes and lives have been devastated by this disaster.
It is going to be a long and hard recovery but if anyone can do it, the Japanese can. Have seen a lot of newspaper reports in the past days referring to the Japanese as being stoic. I thought thats sounded like a good description of the Japanese spirt but was not sure what it meant so I looked it up. The description was ; a person who can endure pain or hardship without complaining. The images from the affected area and in our local area would show this with people working together as a team in an orderly and dignified way.
For many of you reading this Japan and its people have most likely had a lasting affect on you in some way. If anyone feels the urge to help then a donation to the relief effort would be greatly appreciated .

Once again a big thank you to everyone that visited Nozawa Onsen this year was a pleasure having you. We look forward to welcoming you again to this beautiful part of the world. Stay safe.
Weekdays in Nozawa even quieter than normal - wide open spaces
New Snow; 0cm

It’s another blue bird day today in Nozawa.
Pretty warm but nice on the slopes and probably the quietest I have ever seen it.
There is literally only a few people around the mountain here and there. Most of the runs you can have to yourself.
More of the mountain is open again today with the Hikage Gondola now open which is good but unfortunately the Nagasaka Gondola is not happening as yet. Reports are sounding like it may be a while away.
Outlook is still for major snow tomorrow night on, so for the few here will be some great conditions ahead.

Has been a pretty wild ride here in Nozawa Onsen.
The last few days have been interesting to say the least. We are still getting some tremors but only mild in comparison to the night before last and things are returning to normal.
Would just like to thank everyone for their well wishes has meant a lot.
There have been no major injuries here and everyone is fine.
We are now more concerned for everyone up North of Tokyo with the devastation there.
On the snow front as mentioned yesterday some good news with the lower lifts opening this morning and people are taking to the slopes. It is pretty hard pack this morning but should loosen up as the day goes on with the sun shining.
Unfortunately the Nagasaka Gondola will probably be a while until it is back on track but hopefully in the next few days all the other lifts will open enabling people to get to the top.
The outlook is promising after some sun today and tomorrow the snow should start to fall on Tuesday night and temperatures will drop too. A decent dump is expected thru the week so should make for some nice conditions ahead.
Stay safe and please come up to Nozawa to visit and ski. It is very quiet here now so think we are going to need any support we can get thru until the end of the season. Thank you.
