March Magic 2010 will history repeat in 2011 in Nozawa Onsen
Similar conditions today in Nozawa with overcast skies not a great day for photos so I am attaching one from March last season. If the weather forecast comes to fruition we could well be in for more of the same this year too so fingers crossed.
Definitely feels like it is getting colder outside and the snow quality was not bad down low this morning.
We did end up getting a decent fall of snow up high yesterday which was encouraging.
Visibility was pretty poor but the snow was quite nice up top.
Outlook is still for temps to drop and snow to fall for the rest of the week so we are waiting on that.
Then blue skies for the weekend. Also there is a Lantern Festival on Saturday night on the Hikage slopes with Fireworks and free give aways, should be a fun evening.
Some more good news today being the March 1st is the start of reduced price on Season Passes. They are now half price so just 30,000 Yen for Adults, 25,000 Yen for Seniors and just 20,000 Yen for Children. Lifts should run until May 8th snow permitting so still more than 2 months of sliding to enjoy!
We are also doing great deals on accommodation until the end of the season with good availability from mid March onwards. So if keen to come up for some Spring skiing and enjoy the food and onsens let us know, we look forward to having you.
Foot Onsen Nozawa Onsen great place to watch the world go by
It is a pretty ordinary day today in Nozawa with overcast skies and light rain at village level.
Up high is thick fog and hard to tell but looks like sleet is falling up there.
Temperatures are set to drop from here so hope that the precipitation will turn into snow as the charts are suggesting.
Yesterday was in comparison a great sunny day on the slopes. With nice conditions up top but the bottom was getting slushy as the day went on. Scattered bits of powder were still up for grabs high for those in the know.
The outlook is still looking good with some consistent snow over the week and temps getting down to -12 degrees up top by Wednesday night.
So for today it might be a good day to hit an Onsen or relax with a good book or both in a foot Onsen. If feeling a bit adventurous could head down to Iiyama just 20 minutes away and check out the temples or new doll museum near the station. Iiyama also has some great culinary delights like the Kappa Sushi Train and the Hirano French Patisserie both well worth the bus ride from Nozawa.

Beautiful bluebird start to the day here in Nozawa Onsen.
No new snow to report overnight and looking like a fairly nice and warm day on the slopes.
Yesterday was a glorious day by all reports with about 25cm of fresh and clear skies it was the best day we have had for a while. Good timing for the weekend crowd who quickly got in to the fresh powder.
The outlook is for more snow starting from tonight and set to fall all week not huge amounts but fairly consistent with temperatures set to drop. Should be a nice return to winter conditions at least for the for the top of the resort.

Looks like the sacrificing of skis has paid off and we had a good dump of snow last night.
Reports are showing up to 25cm of fresh up top so not quite the Magic Foot but a most welcome covering all the same.
It started to snow at about 7pm last night and continued until about 8am this morning.
The sun has come out now so it should make for a great day on the slopes and a much nicer than yesterday which had poor visibility.
As usual the weekend crowd has rolled in but seems a little quieter again than last weekend.
The outlook is for more snow from tomorrow night and continuing through the week so hopefully the spring like system that hit us last week has been broken.
Just wanted to give a little plug to the great Lifties of Nozawa Onsen. Lots of them are more mature lets say and are devoted to the cause of getting all the happy guests up and on their way. Having worked with them for many years have not met a happier and more dedicated team anywhere in the world. They are always on hand to brush the snow of your seat and give you a smile as you fly past.
One very cute Snow Monkey near Nozawa Onsen by Mark Jobson
It is definitely a change of scenery in Nozawa today with clouds blanketing the surrounding mountains for a change. The sunshine and views we have enjoyed the last few days have disappeared.
Still not sure that it is the change we need yet as we are yet to see any new snow.
Some light rain has fallen this morning in the Village and we are hoping it may convert to snow up high as the temperatures drop.
So today or tomorrow may be a good day to go and visit the famous Snow Monkeys at Jigokudani in Yudanaka National Park. I actually saw a Monkey in Nozawa yesterday so thought a good time to mention our furry friends.
This park is inhabited by Japanese Macaques, which are also known as snow monkeys. The snow monkeys descend from the mountains during the day to sit in the warm waters of the onsen and return to the security of the forests in the evenings. This is the only known place in the world where wild monkeys bathe in natural hot spring water.

We take guests for a look most weeks on a Wednesday or Saturday in the afternoon so can ski in the morning and get a good National Geographic moment in the afternoon. Usually along with a visit to the famous Iiyama Sushi train!
