New Snow 20cm

Base @ Yamabiko 285cm

It has been snowing pretty consistently in Nozawa this morning since about 7 am.  Nice to see the snow again – it is a bit wet down low but should be falling well up on the upper slopes of the mountain.

Yesterday was another warm day especially down low where we experienced Spring-like snow conditions.  The southerly winds probably had a bit to do with that as well but it felt like spring.

Up high was still nice though but pretty busy – one of the peak weekends of the season.  Today will be quiet again and should continue until Friday which is the first day of a three day weekend (National Holiday.

The outlook is good now with a snow then sun rhythm coming in again with decent falls expected every second day.  Temperatures look like they will be pretty up and down too.

Anyway still snowing outside so time to get up there.

The photo above was taken by one of our guests  thought it was a pretty special one. Myoko is about a 60km drive from Nozawa and can take about 1 Hour depending how you drive. They have had an amazing amount of snow there too this season with Seki Onsen weighing in at about a 5 meter base at the peak!

Nozawa Onsen Post Office and ATM

by Mark on February 5, 2011

Nozawa Onsen Post Office/ATM a cool place to send a post card

New Snow: 0 cm

Base at Top; 280cm

Not a lot going on with the snow overnight so thought would give you some useful information on the Post Office and ATM in Nozawa Onsen

The Post Office is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm for sending Mail and Packages

The ATM at the Post Office will take most major cards including ones with Plus, Maestro and Cirrus on the back also Visa and Master Card.

The ATM is open

Monday to Friday 8:45 -18:00

Saturday 9:00 – 17:00

Sunday 9:00 – 14:00

Daily limit is generally set by your bank at about 80,000 Yen a day so talk to them if want to increase it.

Quite a buzz and a bit of traffic around town this morning with the weekend crowd filtering in.

Looks like it could be a busy day on the slopes.

No new snow to report overnight and the base has come back a bit but still great snow quality all over the mountain.

Yesterday turned out to be pretty sunny after the early fall and there was a dusting on the groomers that made for a fun day.

On the long term forecast looks like a decent dump has raised its head for next friday night which should be good timing for the long weekend if it eventuates.

Anyway have a great day up there and stay safe on the slopes

February in Nozawa Onsen

by Mark on February 4, 2011

Gods are smiling on us in Nozawa Onsen

Surprisingly a snowy start to the morning here in Nozawa.

Was a clear night last night so was expecting a bluebird start to the day but was snowing nicely at about 8 am.

Has stopped now and the sun is starting to come out so looks like we are in fro a clear day ahead.

The light dusting should be nice though as was getting a little icy in places yesterday.

Otherwise a perfect day up top and snow quality on the groomers was great

Pretty warm day compared to the wintery conditions we had been experiencing.

The outlook is still fairly sunny with some light snow from time to time and temps pretty high.

Then expected to drop next weekend and some moderate snow on the radar

January was one of the snowiest we have had for a few years so will be interesting to see what February will bring.

Nozawa Onsen Ski Patrol

by Mark on February 3, 2011

The Sun Run to Skyline from Yamabiko Nozawa Japan

Another magnificent day here in Nozawa.

The sky does not get much bluer than today and looks great next to the surrounding white.

Temps are warming up and should be a terrific day on the Mountain.

Yesterday was beautiful up top with great visibility could see all the way to the Sea of Japan. Magic views of all the surrounding resorts too could see Shiga Kogen , Naeba and all the way to Joetsu.

Sunset was spectacular too

On the snow front just had a few people come down telling me there was still a few nice pockets of powder up top if you know where to look but was getting a little heavy down low.

The outlook is for plenty more Sun to  come and higher freezing point at about 1000m. It then should drop back down later next week.

Anyway for now enjoy the sublime conditions with over 300cm base up top. Don’t forget the sunglasses and sunscreen!

Today is Setsubun day so look out for the flying beans as people throw them out the front door and quickly close it. The meaning is to send the Devil out and bring the good luck in.

Ran into an old friend the other day on the slopes Kitamura san the head of Nozawa Onsen Ski Patrol. Taicho as he is known is a lovely guy and runs a tight ship. A bit stricter than the old patrol boss who retired a few years ago but still pretty easy going as long as you are doing the right thing! Great to have a good team taking care of you on the slopes of Nozawa.

Sun Sun Sun Here we come

Togari Ski Resort a hidden gem with some great exploring to do

Magnificent Blue Bird day today in Nozawa and there are amazing views across the Valley to Myoko.

Slopes are looking perfect with a light dusting of 5cm overnight.

Will be a great day up there especially for the kids and fair weather skiers.

Yesterday was a pretty rough one up on the slopes with strong winds and very low visibility.

There were still some good powder stashes for the brave but people were ducking in for cover pretty early for an Onsen. Nozawa Onsen has 13 public Onsens and a handful of private onsens that the public can use. They are terrific to soak away the aches and pains after a hard day on the slopes

The out look is for sunny days to continue and not much snow fall on the radar at this stage. Could change pretty quickly though, but if not happy to have the sunshine for a while
