Nozawa Onsen Ski Lifts in Motion

Hachiman Lift Nozawa Onsen The Lone Rider

Yesterday on the mountain was nothing short of amazing.

The heavy snow stopped falling about Lunch time and the sun came out.

It was glorious!

With almost no one on the slopes it made for conditions as good as it gets.

Stories were abounding of waist deep powder runs, people getting buried and skis getting lost.

At the end of the day everyone was beaming and many saying the best day they had ever had!
This morning the snow continues and has been snowing light to moderately all morning.

Not heavy enough to collect a lot on ground and forecast to ease but wait and see.
The days ahead are looking like lots of sunshine and light winds so should be perfect.

Epic Snow Fall in Nozawa

by Mark on January 31, 2011

Getting Deep in Nozawa

New Snow 50cm

Base  350cm

It has been an intense time for snow fall in Nozawa Onsen

In the last 2 days we have had around 1 meter of fresh snow fall

Another massive 50cm overnight!

Base now over 350cm up at Yamabiko

For the powder hounds it is paradise for the locals the battle with Mother nature continues.

Still snowing heavily outside at the moment think we are ready for a break.

Roads were treacherous yesterday with ice pot holes and very low visibility

Yesterday on the mountain was awesome if you could find the steeps. On the slopes that had been groomed there was a continuous layer of fresh snow. People were getting buried if the ventured too far off on the sides

We have seen these levels before but not for a few years now. It is epic

Bucket Loads of Snow in Nozawa Onsen

Ogama Nozawa Cooking Onsen coolest Kitchen on Earth

New Snow; 30cm

Base at Yamabiko; 320cm

The good times just keep rolling in Nozawa. We woke up to the gentle hum of the snow blowers once again this morning and it looks like we have been blessed with another magic foot with 30cm of snow blocking my door as I tried to venture out.

It started last night at about 8pm but had stopped around midnight then as predicted kicked in heavy overnight.

It is still snowing very heavy outside at the moment and set to continue lightly throughout today.

For the powder hounds this might be your day as the forecast is looking like good chances of sunshine in the next week along with some warmer temperatures.

Anyway will keep it short so you can strap on your powder boards and get up there.

Stay safe.

Heaven under the Hikage Gondola Nozawa January 2011

One of those picture perfect mornings in Nozawa Onsen. One that you hope for at any ski resort in the world.
Driving around the resort this morning was sublime just pillows of snow on top of houses, trees and signs.
People were looking very happy and eager to get up the hill with 20cm of fresh again since lifts closed.

We have been waiting for a day like this for a while now, so anyone just coming for the weekend has been blessed and for the hard core crowd who have been getting buried in the trenches all week it will be a welcome sign to see the sun.

Don’t think it will last long though as forecasts are for heavy snow tonight and can see a few snow clouds looming in the distance

Yesterday was amazing conditions for powder hounds on the mountain with stories coming back of chest deep runs.
The outlook is for lots of sunshine next week and temps are set to rise a bit. Kind of looking forward to it!
Anyway today may just be the best day of the season again! Just keeps getting better so get out and enjoy it.

Another 40cm of Snow in Nozawa overnight

by Mark on January 28, 2011

The Snow Gods are singing this season in Nozawa Onsen

New Snow; 40cm

Base at Top; 300cm

People sitting at their desks in Tokyo, Sydney or Katmandu must sometimes think I make this stuff up!

We have had another 40cm overnight!
The base is now at a very respectable 300cm and building.

Once again this dump was not forecast the powers to be were saying 1 cm of light snow.
There was a little more than that! It was dumping last night and people were getting covered when they went for a short walk outside.

It will be bottomless powder for the willing this morning and the keen ones were scrambling to get up the hill for first tracks.

Not that it mattered yesterday as you could ski the same course over and over and the tracks were getting filled.
Scary thing is they are actually predicting heavy snow for tomorrow Saturday night so who knows what that will bring.

May be a little sun in the morning before the dump then more next week.
Anyone here or heading up for the weekend should reap some rewards
Cold temps up top today so rug up and if driving up be careful on the roads
