Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival First Flames

Probably under baked the Fire Festival this year so to speak so thought should post a few more photos from what was an amazing night as always

Was even more special for us this year with the birth of our first son Kai arriving on the scene in May last year. We didn’t erect a tower this time but he was there in force and felt the heat and atmosphere.

Dosojin Fire Gods Nozawa Onsen

Dosojin Gods Nozawa Onsen

At the entry to most houses in the Village you will see these two Gods one man and one woman. They are said to ward off evil and bring good luck.

History says that these two gods were not very pretty so had troubles getting married. But eventually they met and had a baby boy. So they are also known as the gods for Match Making and Fertility Gods. Seemed to work for us!

On the snow front

The stars were shining last night over Nozawa and this morning it is doing its best to go blue skies.
Still a bit of light cloud hanging about and some snow forecast for later in the day

Snow conditions are terrific and with very light winds should be an amazing day.
Yesterday saw some great powder but also some strong winds in the middle of the day which saw a few people head for cover early. The wind then abated so was some solitude and superb conditions on the empty runs.

Great sunset too last night to top of the day

The forecast is for light snow over the next few days then the next decent dump is still looming for Saturday
A few of the Yellow Coats school groups on the slopes at the moment otherwise lift lines are pretty non existent.
Together with the stellar run of great snow conditions it is an awesome time to be in the Mountains

The Magic Foot of snow in Nozawa

by Mark on January 25, 2011

Karasawa Above Villa Nozawa pathway to the Mountains

Its happened again in the Magic Foot of snow in Nozawa with a fresh 30 cm falling again last night

Was not snowing when we went to bed but big fat flakes falling this morning and a few people have come down already with that satisfaction plus look on their faces

From all reports it was light and fluffy and no one around so made for perfect conditions

The Sun has also just poked its head out so can’t ask for much more

Outlook is for a few days of little or no snow which is pretty rare these days then a big dump on Saturday night

Anyway time to get out from under the desk and hit the slopes

Another 30cm dump in Nozawa enough to fly the coop

With some of the best skiing around on the doorstep here is the place for a Board Meeting

Arena is the big green building just above Lodge Nagano. It was another big production of the boom times. It had an awesome Aquatic Centre, equipped with Wave pool, slides and a lap pool. Was a great little summer escape from the cold.

Unfortunately it went the way of the dodo a few years back when the roof caved in.

The main building remains and houses onsens, sauna and a restaurant with great views. Good to go for dinner and an Onsen  for about 1200 Yen

There is also a big Convention hall where they have some Concerts and meetings. If I was in charge of choosing a venue for annual meeting this would be my pick with powder beckoning at the door step of Nozawa. The deep discussions may take a different turn!

Here’s Comes The Nozawa Sun

On the weather in Nozawa here comes the sun…

Has been a while since we have seen it here and it is a welcome sign.

The forecast is for more snow this afternoon so not sure the sun will last.

No fresh snow to report overnight, there is probably a light dusting from after the lifts closed yesterday

Amazing conditions across the mountains yesterday. Was busy early but still some good powder stashes to be had.

Then the crowds dispensed around midday and the slopes were pretty quiet.

Today will be much the same crowd wise, just had a look up Karasawa and it was like a private slope with only a handful enjoying the sunshine.

Sunshine & Snow on Way

Tomorrow is looking like some sunshine too so if this snow hits this afternoon should be another awesome day.

Light snow set to continue throughout the week so enjoy

Nozawa Onsen Night Life

by Mark on January 23, 2011

Geoff Booth going exploring Nozawa Japan

Apologies for the late report was a big night all round in Nozawa
Started snowing heavy at about 1am this morning and when I surfaced there was 30cm of fresh and very light snow gathered
This was once again a bit unexpected the forecasts were not predicting anywhere near that much.
We are starting to call it the Magic Nozawa Foot, 30cm being a Foot in the old scale and seems to be pretty consistent that we are waking up to a foot
One foot is not very exciting if you are a surfer but as a skier or boarder it is a blessing.
Temps are cold and people are leaving the town with the Sunday afternoon rush back home so some amazing conditions for anyone staying on
The great conditions and big smiles just keep on coming in Nozawa

Busy Night Oyu Dori Nozawa Onsen

Nozawa Onsen is not really known for its night life and if it is a party ski trip you are after probably better to go else where. But there are some really cool little bars and restaurants to have a quiet beer and reminisce on the turns of the day.

If want something a but livelier there are a few Karaoke Bars that you can let your hair down in and belt out a few tunes. After a few sakes everyone has a bit of Elvis in them!

Nozawa Onsen Turning it on again

by Mark on January 21, 2011

Racking them up Yamabiko Nozawa Onsen by Michael Hill

It is going to be one of those perfect days in Nozawa today
It was not forecast but we received a good dump starting yesterday afternoon which continued through to this morning. There is at least 20cm of fresh in the Village and should be 30 cm up top.
The sun has come out to play and winds are moderate being a Friday crowds are non existent and all the elements have come together for a postcard day out there.
Outlook is for more sunshine tomorrow and a decent fall on Sunday then some sun behind that so we are back into the weather pattern we like to see
Anyway today is going to be special enjoy!
