Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 18 March 2017
Today will remain sunny throughout the afternoon with a slight haze in the sky. For them Powder hounds out there, expect to still find some untouched freshies this morning before the weekend crowd arrive in full force. With temperatures on the plus side up top today, make the most of cruising along the pistes in the morning, hitting the park or exploring through the trees. As the snow will become slushier in the afternoon why not relax out side at one of the many restaurants up top sipping on a well deserved draft beer!
Sunday 19th March is looking like another sunny morning with chance of light snow later in the afternoon.
Tomorrow Redbull brings to Nozawa Onsen the ‘Red Bull Snow Charge’ a race of snowboarders who send it full charge down the mountain with a 100,000 yen first prize win! Probably not like any other race you have seen before, expect total carnage!
For those who are interested to check it out will have to wake up early as race starts at 8am and will finish with the ceremony at 10am.
Japan or “JaPow”, is renowned for its amazing amount of snow… even in spring! While most ski resorts in Japan start their seasons from mid-late December and go through to late March or early April, Gassan’s season doesn’t actually start until early April, and ends late July. It is located in the central region of Yamagata Prefecture, more than 600km south of Niseko.
Gassan is only a small resort with only 1 lift and 2 T-bars, 10km of slopes available split between beginner, intermediate and advanced runs. The lift ticket prices are just 4,600 yen for 1 adult day pass. The 2017 season is starting on 8 April, and is currently getting 10cm minimum daily! How about a week in Gassan and a week in Nozawa Onsen?
With 25cm of fresh snow just last night, Nozawa Onsen is looking good for spring skiing too! With not as many crowds on the mountain, plenty of bluebird days, and discounted accommodation, contact us today to get a quote and enjoy spring in Nozawa Onsen!

Snowing from yesterday evening continuing through the night has gifted us with some great powder conditions up top today. Currently still snowing and forecasted throughout the day with it easing off this afternoon. With temperatures a little bit lower than previous days expect for some great powder skiing up the Yamabiko area and perfect piste conditions everywhere else.
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 16 March 2017
Today will be a mixed bag of light snow with clouds and sunshine peaking through at times. Great day to head on down to Nozawa Rental at Central apartments for trying out some of our All-Mountain series Skis and Boards before the Long weekend crowds arrive.
Following the weather radar, we could still be in chance of more snow over the next few days but with today expected to be one of the best for snow conditions. Hopefully you have enjoyed the Onsens over the previous days and rested them ski legs in preparation for todays much anticipated powder conditions.
With a long weekend coming up and sunshine predicted in the skies, make the most of today and hope to see everyone getting them powder shots!
The base is edging back upwards brushing against the four meter mark up top once again. Its the winter that keeps on giving with 20cm recorded since last lifts yesterday, 10cm down in the village. The temperatures are pretty cold too, a brisk morning on the Nozawa streets and -7c at the top. There will be plenty of powder pockets today and it shows that the mountain will be fairly competitive with numerous boards and skis in line at 7am. This is a great overnight snowfall for March and I expect excellent conditions across the mountain.
Yesterday continued on the trend of excellent skiing this March. We were suprised that even though there was only 5cm or so recorded, it felt much deeper than this. Perhaps the slopes were filled in by the wind? It snowed lightly during the morning before the clouds parted at around 11am. We were left with great powder snow all day as the sun shone down on the mountain. Later in the afternoon more clouds rolled over bringing the snowfalls we are impacted by today.
Tomorrow it’ll be mostly sunny with light winds and fairly warm temperatures. A spring day of skiing. On Monday, cloudy slightly warmer temps still with snowfalls starting from later afternoon. Wednesday next week is looking to be pretty impressive with NW winds and heavy snowfalls for a 24 hour period. Its possible we may see some impressive totals around this date.
Light snow is falling across the mountain here in Nozawa Onsen this morning. Although overnight totals aren’t significant, it is more than enough to top up the slopes to an almost clean slate. Expect the snow to be slightly wetter or heavier than usual attributed to the warmish (for this area) temperatures. One can assume for some good riding up top, such as the Yamabiko trees and pistes. Expect slower conditions on the lower half of the mountain. Crowd levels are light.
Yesterday we were suprised with clear weather almost all day. The riding was good, best on piste where fast paced groomers gave some adrenaline action. Off piste and the snow was heavy and sticky thanks to the warm spring sunshine. The views of the surrounding countryside were great with deep snow right down in the flat farming plains below the high peaks.
Looking ahead and there are no real warm spikes ahead indication and end to the season. Instead I can see mostly snowy conditions right through next week. Although the freezing level is around 500m higher than mid winter season. Tomorrow these light snow showers will ease and we will have a mostly fine weekend. Temperatures will warm slightly at the start of next week before more snowfalls coming into Wednesday.
