Weather: patchy clouds, light snow expected this afternoon
Yesterday in Nozawa saw bluebird perfection. Plenty of fresh snow, fast and smooth groomers, some powder stashes still hanging around and fairly mild temperatures. The best snow can still be found up top though lower down has been warming up above zero leaving the snow feeling pretty slushy in parts. The slopes were still feeling fast and firm down to The bottom of Paradise, and today should start of similarly before falling into the typical spring pattern of softening in the afternoon.
The week ahead is looking like it’ll be fairly warm, with temperatures at the top reaching zero by Tuesday and hitting the warmest point on Saturday. There are two cooler days in the middle of the week where we may see some snow falling so let’s keep our fingers crossed. It seems like we’ve had our last big dump for the season but there is still a good base up on the mountain and with some lighter snowfalls to come the pistes should be fantastic for a while longer.
Wow. What a day yesterday was. With fifty centimetres of fresh snow from Thursday night until yesterday afternoon, it’s safe to say it was deep out there. There were very few crowds and snow continued to fall for most of the day, giving us fresh tracks even in the afternoon. Who doesn’t love free refills?
Our base is back up to 190cm at the top and 105cm at Uenotaira station thanks to a storm total of around 65cm. Temperatures will be rising today and weekend visitors will be filing in, so you’d be best to get out early today before it all gets tracked out. There are still some sweet powder stashes hanging around!
Looking ahead for the rest of the weekend and the week to come, it looks like warmer temperatures are on the rise. The mercury should still stay below zero up top until Tuesday, then we’ll be in for some spring t-shirt weather. Some light snow is predicted for Sunday night up top, which could be the last snowfall we see for a while. We hope you all got some great riding in yesterday and some more again today under the sun!
Weather: Heavy snow falling right down to the village, cold temps and mild winds.
Shaun launching off a drop in the trees
Yesterday saw some beautiful powder riding up top, with around 30cm of fresh. The trees were popular but once again the mountain was empty! No queues at any of the lifts and fresh tracks to be found all day long. The snow hasn’t stopped since Wednesday night, and just when we thought we’d see the best of this storm yesterday, we awoke to plenty more snow. We’ve got around 25cm of fresh down in the village with more up top as the snow keeps falling heavily. The forecast is predicting snowfalls to continue throughout the day… Let’s hope it keeps coming down this heavily!
Looking at the days ahead of us, it’s going to be warming up again in Nozawa. Tomorrow should see another fairly cold day with temps of -6°C up top though warmer down the bottom being a couple of degrees above zero. Winds will be mild for the whole week ahead, and the snow storm will ease up with not much snow predicted for the future. Be sure to get out there today as this could be the last powder day of the season! It’s going to be a good one.
Weather: Heavy snow falling right down to the village, cold temps and mild-moderate winds.
Light snow was falling in Nozawa yesterday and continued into the night. At some point in the night those light flakes became big fluffily flakes and began falling a lot more heavily. We’ve woken up to heavy snow and it feels like winter again. Temperatures will reach a low of -8°C today, with winds moving at up to 25km/h in the afternoon bringing the windchill down to -16°C. Visibility isn’t looking so clear up the top, but fromthe top of the Nagasaka Gondola it’s looking clearer.
Snow is expected to fall for the remainder of the day; originally it was expected to be just light snow so we hope this heavier snow keeps up! Temperatures are set to drop down to -10°C up top overnight and rise just one degree tomorrow to -9°C for the day while snow is expected to keep on coming. The freezing level is a few hundred meters below the village so we should see snow continuing to accumulate right down to the village. Keep up your snow dances, it seems to be working!
Weather: Light snow, good visibility below 1400m, cool temperatures and little to no wind.
Yesterday saw some beautiful skiing up on the mountain. Though the snowpack wasn’t in the best condition, the skies were blue and temperatures were warm. The pistes started off quite icy though began to soften up throughout the day, without losing much speed.
This morning we’ve woken up to a few snowflakes falling down in the village, a good indication that more is falling up top. The clouds are hovering just above 1400m, so visibility up at Yamabiko isn’t looking great. Everywhere else is looking good at the moment. We’re expecting between 5 – 10cm today so the pistes should have a nice top up to keep us going. Temperatures aren’t going to be very warm today, but should continue to drop, becoming coldest on Friday at -10°C. We’re expecting light snowfalls for both tomorrow and Friday so we could see some nice coverage by the weekend!
