A beautiful day is ahead of us in Nozawa. With conditions on the slopes being very icy yesterday, We’re looking forward to the pistes softening a little under the sun. Temperatures are set to reach 0 degrees up top and 8 down in the village; beautiful spring weather. The UV rating is high today so sunscreen is recommended to avoid goggle tans!

The next few days are looking good for the mountain, with temperatures set to fall tonight as clouds move in to place. We should see some snow start falling in the early hours of tomorrow and continue through the day, becoming heaviest tomorrow night. Light snowfalls are expected to push on until Friday keeping the pistes topped up and fresh. Temperatures are looking fairly cold for the rest of the week, sitting between -7°C and -10°C. A bit of a contrast from wearing a t shirt or light sweater today back to full winter gear!

Some of the runs listed below are now closed due to lack of snow.

Light snow falling in Nozawa, 6cm of Fresh

by Mark on March 21, 2016

Base at top: 130 cm

Temp at Top: -5 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira: 60cm

New Snow since close: 6 cm

Weather: Light snow easing, mild winds and fairly cold.

Uenotaira after the last light snowfall, should be looking similar today!

It’s great to see some snow falling here in Nozawa! The pistes had been suffering a little with warmer temperatures and a lack of snow, though we’ve received 6cm of fresh up the top of the mountain. Light snow is still falling right down to  the village so hopefully we see some more accumulating.

Temperatures are set to rise a little tomorrow with some blue skies expected. It should be a beautiful day up on the hill with little wind and no crowds. Today is a public holiday for the Japanese so it may be a little busier than usual on the slopes before dropping back to normal tomorrow. Temperatures will be once again decreasing on Wednesday as clouds are expected to move in. It looks as though we could get a nice top up of snow on Wednesday night with continuing snowfalls for a few days after. It’s looking like we may end the month on a high note!

Back below zero on the mountain in Nozawa

by Mark on March 20, 2016

Base at top: 120 cm

Temp at Top: -4 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira: 55cm

New Snow since close: 0 cm

Weather: cloudy, chance of snow this afternoon, low visibility

Looking very cloudy in Nozawa today
PW3A7877

Temperatures have dropped considerably overnight; from 4 degrees yesterday to -4 today. The skies are looking fairly cloudy all round and temperatures will continue to fall throughout the day reaching a low of -8°C up the top this evening. Unfortunately the forecast has been downgraded, though they’re still predicting a few centimetres of snow for today higher up on the mountain, while lower down may receive some rain.

Looking ahead into the week, it seems like things will be improving from Tuesday night. Temperatures will stay fairly low throughout the week with snow falling on Tuesday night and becoming heaviest on Wednesday night. Light to moderate snowfalls should be fairly consistent during the second half of the week, with mild to no winds for the most part of the week. Get your snow dance on, some late March snow is just what we’re hoping for!

Lapping the halfpipe out in the sun

With more sun for a good portion of the day yesterday, the snowpack was struggling to stay fast. The snow has become slushy across most of the mountain. Up at Yamabiko things were better than lower down, though with the mercury sitting at 6°C, It was feeling quite slow by the afternoon.

With all that said, there’s some good spring snowfall on its way to Nozawa. Temperatures will be dropping fairly quickly over the day reaching -1°C by tonight and -5°C tomorrow morning. There’s a possible chance of light rain today which should become snow up on the mountain in the evening. We’re expecting light snow through all of sunday and a little more on Monday. There’s a good amount expected to fall consistently from Wednesday through until the weekend. Get your snow dance on! It should be a nice cold week to come.

Furasato Onsen, something to try on a day like today when the snow isn’t so great. This Onsen is one of the few paid onsens in Nozawa but there are 13 others to try for free.

Waz and Phoebe owning the halfpipe yesterday

PW3A3621

What a beautiful day yesterday was. The sun was shining and the temperatures were warm. It was a t-shirt kind of day. Conditions at the top of the mountain stayed fairly good all day given the warmth. Uenotaira was still good, becoming a bit sticky later in the day, though the park and halfpipe were popular all day long. lower down on the mountain the snow became fairly slushy and a few slopes have become somewhat patchy.

It’s looking like it’ll be another beautiful morning; cooler temperatures overnight should have hardened up the snowpack and the groomers will have made things nice and smooth again. Temperatures will be hovering around 5 degrees up top, so we’re in for another warm one. clouds are expected to start moving in bringing some rain with them. Rain may continue while it stays warm for today and tomorrow, and as the temperature drops tomorrow evening we should start to see snow forming up on the mountain. This snow is predicted to fall over a couple of days so it should be a good week ahead. There’s some heavy snow predicted for later in the week so we’ll see how that plays out. Fingers crossed!
