A quiet day up at Yamabiko yesterday
Beautiful spring skiing is how you could describe yesterday’s conditions. The snowpack softened over the day under the warmth of the sun, though the slopes stayed fast all day long above 1100m. Lower down the snow started feeling slower in the afternoon, but hopefully a fairly cold night has hardened the snowpack up a bit.
Today’s looking like it’ll be a bluebird day with temperatures warming up to 4°C. Winds should be mild and the views should be awesome. you may be able to see the coastline in the distance from up at Yamabiko. Temperatures will stay warm through until tomorrow, though the skies will be cloudy with the possibility of rain. The mercury should drop again from Saturday, becoming colder early into next week. It looks like the cold temperatures will also bring us some snow!
Enjoy the bluebird today, It’s going to be a good one.
Good news coming from Nozawa lately. We’ve had a nice lot of snow falling across the mountain. Our forecast suddenly upgraded on Sunday and from when snow started falling until it stopped yesterday afternoon, we saw around 30cm of fresh, light, fluffy snow. It’s safe to say it came as a welcome surprise. Conditions were great over most of the mountain. Some of the lower slopes were still a little patchy but there were plenty of stashes around. With very few people on the mountain yesterday, there were fresh tracks to be found all day.
The forecast is looking fairly warm for the next couple of days, with temperatures sitting at around 0 degrees up top and warmer down in the village. Tomorrow is looking like a bluebird day. Unfortunately there’s some rain predicted for Friday, though the forecast is also saying snow so at this stage it could go either way. Today should be fantastic up there so get out and enjoy it!
Weather: Light snow throughout the day, Winds decreasing, fairly cold.
We’re all thrilled about this surprise snowfall here in Nozawa. Yesterday afternoon there was about 15cm of fresh that had accumulated, and with a some more overnight, we’re probably pushing towards that 30cm mark. The base was still somewhat icy up top; The lower down runs like Uenotaira and Paradise seemed to have the best coverage. Challenge and Utopia were also quite fun though if you aren’t a fan of moguls then it might not be your favourite.
Snow is still falling here in Nozawa and it looks as though it could continue all day. Temperatures are colder than yesterday and the wind is somewhat stronger, so dress warm today. The next few days up on the mountain should be beautiful; plenty of fresh snow and some sunshine on its way with warmer temps.
Weather: Snowing throughout the day, very mild wind.
Heavy snow is falling right now across Nozawa! It seemed that yesterday night the forecast changed out of the blue and we’ve been gifted with this. We’re expecting over 15cm throughout the day; a beautiful spring surprise. The pistes should be nice and fast right down to the village today with this fresh snow. It’s coming down fairly hard here in the village though the flakes are falling even more heavily up top; we’re excited to go and see for ourselves!
Winds will be mild again today, becoming heavier in the night as gusts reach around 40km/h over the course of Tuesday. Temperatures aren’t too cold today; we’re looking at around -5°C up top and just above zero down in the village. Looking ahead into the next few days, it looks as though this snow could continue falling into tomorrow before easing up as the clouds disappear and temperatures rise. Wednesday should be beautiful. The snowpack should stay nice and fresh and the sun should be shining down.
Hope to see you up on the slopes today or at the free fondue stall that’s happening today over at the Hikage area from 10.30am!
Weather: snowy up to 1400m, clear up at Yamabiko. Very mild wind.
What a great day yesterday turned out to be. fairly nice weather all round with some very light snow falling here and there. The best snow seemed be stashed lower down. Paradise is always a hit and that’s where a number of people were riding yesterday. We got a very light dusting of snow overnight which will hopefully have made it a bit easier to hold an edge in the snowpack.
Things are looking cold and cloudy up top by the looks of the snowcams. a few hundred meters lower down at the top of Uenotaira Visibility seems much better with all the clouds higher up on the mountain. We’re expecting some light snow to fall later in the day, becoming heavier overnight. Snow showers are expected in Nozawa tomorrow too, thought the freezing level is a couple hundred meters above the village so we may see some light rain down in the village. Temperatures will be hovering at around -5°C for today and tomorrow before dropping again on Tuesday and then warming up for the rest of the week. bluebird days are on the agenda so some beautiful spring skiing awaits!
The Hatoguruma Cup Top to Bottom downhill race is being held as we post this report. Defending champ Gab Sutter from Villa Nozawa is up there again and over 200 competitors are flying down from Yamabiko now. Will keep you posted on the results. There is also Slalom and Giant Slalom racing happening over at Kandahar today so look out for skiers flying down there.
There will be free chocolate fondue served at the Hikage area from 10.30am tomorrow, so be sure to plan a run down forest trail in the morning!
