Weather: cloudy, very mild winds and warm temperatures.
Spring has paid an early visit to Nozawa, with warm temperatures and sunshine for the past few days. Tomorrow night we should see temperatures dropping back below zero. Move over spring, winter’s coming back. Our pistes have been feeling fairly soft thanks to the sun and warm temperatures, though things should be rapidly improving. With heavy snow expected for most of Wednesday, it’s looking like things will be back to normal in no time.
Snowfall is looking fairly consistent right through until the weekend, being heaviest on Wednesday. Looking ahead, it seems like there is no sight of spring in the coming week. Temperatures will be staying low with more snow after the weekend. Looks like it’ll soon be time to get those shovels back out. Get your snow dance on everyone!
Weather: Sunny, some moderate wind easing and warm temperatures.
With the sun shining brightly and the warm temperatures, the good weather attracted a lot of local Japanese folk up to the mountain. Things were getting quite busy in sections yesterday, though crowds seemed to dissipate in the afternoon. The morning started off nicely, though the snowpack soon softened under the beaming sun. It was a beautiful spring day, though we’re looking forward to winter conditions being back from Wednesday onwards!
Yesterday’s Tomyo festival was a success. Everyone enjoyed watching the fire dancers while drinking hot sake or eating an ice cream, though the main attractions were the fireworks and the flaming torch run. All the lights were switched off and dozens of skiers and boarders rode down the Hikage run carrying fire torches.
The sun will be shining brightly once again today, though clouds are expected to move in by the evening with a possible chance of rain. Today will be the warmest day of this spell; The mercury will be dropping gradually back to normal cold temperatures over the next couple of days. We’re expecting snow to start falling from Wednesday, and it’s looking like it’ll be fairly consistent right up until the weekend.
Given the warmer temperatures and sun, the snowpack has held particularly well. We’ve lost some base since the last huge dump, though there are still some good runs to be had, particularly higher up. Lower down on the mountain things were getting a bit slushy but hopefully some cooler temps during the night have firmed the pistes up. The Yamabiko A course has reopened today so you might be able to score some fresher snow over that side of the mountain.
Today’s looking like a fairly warm day. The sun is out and the mercury is sitting at around 4°C. Clouds should start forming as the lifts are closing this evening. These clouds will likely stick around for the weekend, with a possible chance of rain. Fortunately things will be cooling down again from Monday night onwards, with some decent snowfalls on the horizon for midweek.
Tonight on the Hikage slopes is the annual Tomyo Winter Night Festival. There will be performances from a group called “Camara”, with free Sake and ice cream, followed by a torch run down the Hikage slope and fireworks. It should be a wonderful evening so be sure to get there. Here’s some more information from the Nozawa Resort website.
After a beautiful past few days, temperatures are warming up and the snowpack is starting to soften. There’s still some great skiing to be had, though the pistes aren’t as fast as usual. With the sun out again today, it should be another beautiful spring day. Naski, the resort’s mascot was out for a slide again yesterday showing us all how it’s done and you might spot him out there again today. It’s probably best to get up the mountain early while the snow is best and to spend the afternoon having a rest, an onsen, or going for a walk around town.
Spring has arrived in Nozawa Onsen, though our base is still just below two meters and we’re expecting some more snow after the weekend. This weekend is looking fairly warm with a chance of some rain. We’ll wait and see if that eventuates but we’re hopeful that it won’t hit us very hard. We should have some awesome days to come once temperatures cool down next week and snow starts falling.
Not a cloud in the sky here today. The forecast suggests that we may see some cloud forming with light snow flurries, though at this stage it’s looking like a bluebird for us. The pistes are still fantastic with plenty of fast and fresh snow. The powder seems to have become somewhat crusty lower down due to sun followed by cold temperatures overnight, though you’ll probably still have good chances up top of finding some powder. The last two days have been absolutely brilliant and we’re hoping that will carry on into today to make three awesome days.
Temperatures will be rising over the next few days, reaching the warmest point on Sunday before cooling back down again for the start of the new week. It looks like there’ll be a couple of bluebird days in there and a couple of cloudy days too. Winds should be fairly mild for most of the coming week. We’re expecting some more snow once the temperatures drop after the weekend.
The Yamabiko A course is closed at the moment and will reopen on the 8th of March. There is a race being held from the 5th until the 8th so be sure to head over and catch a glimpse of some of the race if you can. It should be an exciting event!
