Best day of the season for Nozawa

by Mark on March 2, 2016

Base at top: 210cm

Temp at Top: -8 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira: 150cm

New Snow since close: 5 cm

Weather: Light snow, fairly cold and mild winds.

PW3A2025

With 70cm of snow blanketing Nozawa in just over 24 hours, yesterday quickly became one of the best days of the season. Crowds were few and powder was aplenty, with it being almost too deep in sections. The snow eased up in the middle of the day and the sun was around for most of the afternoon. There were fresh tracks to be found all day long; right up until the last lift of the afternoon.

It is currently still snowing here right down to the village. It’s only light though it all adds up! Winds are fairly mild and the temperature has eased a little, rising to -8°C. Still nice and cold so the powder will still be fresh and the groomers will be corduroy perfection. Temperatures will be rising a bit towards the end of the week so now’s the time to get out and enjoy this powder!

Thanks to everyone for your snow dances! They did not go unnoticed.

60cm in the past 24 hours in Nozawa!

by Mark on March 1, 2016

Base at top: 210 cm

Temp at Top: -12 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira: 150cm

New Snow since close: 45 cm

Weather: still snowing heavily, moderate winds

Warnings: Avalanche risk is elevated today. take precautions and don’t ride alone.

PW3A1987

We were all tapping our fingers yesterday waiting for the snow to start. By midday, snow was falling heavily. We’ve jumped from a base of 150cm yesterday to 210 today… 20cm yesterday afternoon and 40cm overnight. The biggest dump of the season! It’s still coming down heavily and should do so for a while longer. today’s the day for powder skis and boards.

The combination of -13°C and strong winds will make for a chilly day, so layer up. Face masks are highly recommended to keep the fresh snow off your face! It’s the first of February which marks the end of winter, though obviously there is still some snow around, plenty of snow.

Enjoy the snow today, it could likely be the deepest powder of the season!

The big day in Nozawa.

by Mark on February 29, 2016

Base at top: 145cm

Temp at Top: -1 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira: 95cm

New Snow since close: 0 cm

Weather: cloudy, snow beginning to fall soon

PW3A5834

Today is looking like it could be a cracker of a day here. Heavy snow should start falling soon and continue accumulating quickly. Snow should begin falling at the top of the mountain first before making its way down to the village by the afternoon. Westerly winds will be increasing throughout the day, becoming strongest in the night. Snowfall will be heaviest in the night, with temperatures dropping to -14°C, up top and -6 in the village.

Snow should continue into tomorrow, becoming lighter by the morning. Temperatures will rise slowly through the week, becoming warmest over the weekend. There should be a few glimpses of sun here and there throughout the week, with mild winds for the most part.

Bring on this fresh snow!

Base at top: 150cm

Temp at Top: -4 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira: 95cm

New Snow since close: 0 cm

Weather: fairly clear, clouds developing and winds increasing.

PW3A0480

It’s been a beautiful few days here. The piste conditions have held up surprisingly well in the past few days, given the warmer temperatures we’ve had combined with some sun. Up top things were starting to get a little icy in parts yesterday afternoon, though there were still plenty of fast turns and smooth runs to be had.

Temperatures are going to be somewhat warmer today, possibly softening the snowpack as the day progresses. This being said, Temperatures will drop by tomorrow as some dark clouds are expected to move in. Heavy snow should be falling the whole day long and continue to light snow on Tuesday. Temperatures should be fairly low for a couple days after the dump, keeping the snowpack fresh and powdery. Tonight is the time to start snow dancing; Let’s hope we wake up to see snow falling outside!

Base at top: 160cm
Temp at Top: -4 Degrees
Base at Uenotaira: 115cm
New Snow since close: 1 cm
Weather: clear skies for the time being, clouds and light snow predicted in the afternoon. Mild winds

PW3A1550

Yesterday we saw fairly clear skies for most of the day, temperatures were fairly fresh, much like the snow conditions. There’s still some great snow around from the dump we got midweek, particularly at higher altitudes and on the quieter slopes such as Karasawa or the runs leading down to the Nagasaka gondola midstation.

For the moment the skies are looking fairly clear, though prospective clouds should move over Nozawa at some point today, with light snow expected to fall in the afternoon. Temperatures will be mild, hovering between -5°C and 0°C both today and tomorrow. Winds will be mild today and even more so tomorrow, before picking up in the night as snow begins to fall. Monday is looking fantastic with heavy snow forecast for the whole day. At this stage, we’re looking at 40+cm of snow which could bring our base back above two meters.

Have a good week and get your snow dance on in time for Monday!
