Two beautiful snowy days …What a treat. From Wednesday morning until about midday yesterday we saw snow falling consistently across Nozawa. the clouds cleared out at around lunchtime yesterday and we were left with beautiful blue skies and a whole lot of fresh snow; more than we were expecting.
The skies stayed clear all night, keeping temperatures nice and low and the snow fresh. Today should be another fantastic day with blue skies all around. Some light snow is expected to come once the winds increase in the afternoon.
The forecast is looking ever more in our favour for the start of next week. Monday looks it will be the day with heavy snow expected throughout the day. Temperatures will be rising over the next few days though will drop again once the snow starts coming.
Base at top: 150cm
Temp at Top: -12 Degrees
Base at Uenotaira: 120cm
New Snow since close: 10 cm
Weather: Snowing! easing later in the day. Cold temps and mild winds.
Warnings: Avalanche risk is moderate today.
Yesterday pleasantly surprised us with a total of 22cm covering the mountain throughout the day. Visibility was fairly good for the most part with white out conditions for just a short while in the afternoon. The slopes were fast and smooth and there were some great powder stashes to be found. The sun made an appearance for an hour or so in the middle of the day, just enough to give us a few runs with clear visibility.
Snow has been falling for a few hours now this morning and should continue throughout the day, easing up in the afternoon. Prevailing North Westerly winds will be mild to moderate today, bringing the windchill down to -20°C. Conditions today are great overall so there’s plenty of runs to choose from.
Weather: Snowing! More to come throughout the day. Cold temps and mild winds.
Warnings: Avalanche risk is elevated today. Fresh snow on hardpack/ice can be a dangerous combination, make wise choices!
Thanks to all those who did the snow dance yesterday; it is currently dumping here in Nozawa Onsen! Since snow began falling in the early hours of the morning, we’ve received about 10cm in the past few hours down here in the village and slightly more up top. Quite often this season the pattern we’ve seen is a heavy dump of snow at the end of the week, in time for the weekend. This time though it’s right in the middle of the week. The mountain should be fairly quiet today with fresh snow to be found all day long.
The forecast is predicting another 10cm for the day, though at this rate and with these sizeable, fluffy snowflakes we could easily surpass that. Temperatures are hovering at the -12°C mark up top, and -4°C down here in the village, so dress wisely! These temperatures should continue through until Friday, before slightly warming up. As Friday rolls around, we should see some more heavy snow blanketing Nozawa in time for the weekend.
Weather: overcast, some sun poking through. Snow and cold temps expected tonight
Some light snow was falling yesterday though it stopped prematurely and left us with some sun around the mountain. There were still some decent runs to be had up top at Yamabiko, and with fairly quiet slopes, the skiing was nothing short of enjoyable. The slopes lower down were still quite icy, though judging from the skies and the forecast that could change soon.
We should be seeing darker clouds moving in later in the day, as a cold front moves over Nozawa bringing snow with it. Temperatures will plummet from a fairly mild -5° C today to -12°C by tomorrow, as will the freezing level. Heavy snow should be coming down tonight with lighter snow continuing through the day tomorrow.
Weather: Light snow falling which could continue through the day, light winds
Snow is blanketing the mountain right now as I speak. We’ve got 5cm of fresh during the night to cover the slopes; not a lot but it could keep coming and accumulating over the day. The pistes were fast yesterday, though were becoming quite icy in parts so this snow should give us some more edge hold especially on the steeper terrain. Yamabiko was popular yesterday, with the best snow being found higher up and the weekend crowds all getting some last runs in before heading home last night. Now that we’re back to weekdays and well past school holidays, the mountain is usually fairly empty from Monday to Friday, and late Sunday afternoons as evidenced in the photo below! There’s nothing like having a whole run to yourself.
Looking ahead, it appears that Wednesday and Saturday are looking very cold —around -13° C for both days is on the cards. These days should bring us some great snow if the numbers in the forecast materialise into fluffy white snowflakes. The freezing level seems to be dropping as the week progresses which is great news, hopefully bringing some more snow right down to the village and making those last runs home all the more enjoyable.
