As snow fell across the mountain yesterday we were all excited to see the snow depth building up again. We had our fingers crossed that it would continue well into the night, which it did, becoming heavier. We’ve woken up to find about 30cm of fresh in the village and blue skies above us. Crisp temperatures should keep the snowpack nice and fresh all day long. We suggest that you get out early this morning, with clouds coming back in the afternoon bringing more snow once again.

Snow should begin lightly falling this afternoon, continuing through until tomorrow and becoming heaviest at around the middle of the day. We’re expecting to get hit with another thirty centimetres hopefully. Temperatures will be staying fairly low all week with more heavy snow predicted for the weekend and early into next week. Things are looking good for us in Nozawa!

Snow is falling in Nozawa

by Mark on February 15, 2016

Base at top: 120 cm

Temp at Top: -12 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira: 90 cm

New Snow since close: 2 cm

Weather: Snow falling, mild winds and moderately cold temperatures.

Waking up in the morning to see that it’s snowing outside never gets old. And today is one of those mornings! Our village had been looking a little bare after a couple of warm days but It’s getting a nice top up to bring things back to normal. We’re currently down to about -4°C in the village and -12°C up the top. With these temperatures and dense low-lying clouds above us, this snow should be falling all day. The freezing level has dropped right down to sea level so we’ll be seeing snow across all of Nozawa.

Looking ahead it seems as though we’ll have fairly steady temperatures for the next few days with light snow tomorrow becoming heavier overnight and falling heavily throughout Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to rise again later in the week though not like the previous spike. We should have beautiful mild temperatures with some sun for skiing. This week is looking pretty good!

Warm days are soon to be gone in Nozawa

by Mark on February 14, 2016

Base at top: 140 cm

Temp at Top: 4 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira: 90 cm

New Snow since close: 0 cm

Weather: Rain, warmer temperatures will be dropping tonight.

PW3A8557

The past few days have been pretty warm in Nozawa Onsen. We’ve had the pleasure of being able to sit outside and soak up the sun, to ride in t-shirts, and to not worry about being cold when sitting on the chairs. With this comes a payoff though. The clouds are currently letting down rain over us and this will likely continue until the afternoon.

Temperatures are set to suddenly drop tonight and the raindrops will turn to snowflakes. By tomorrow morning, The mercury should be reading a chilly -12° Celsius with heavy snow falling. Prevailing North Westerly winds will be fairly strong in the morning, easing later in the day as the snowfall eases too. We should be seeing some more heavy snow by Wednesday which should bring back Nozawa’s magic on the mountain. There is still plenty of magic to be found around the village on a day like today. This could be a great chance to explore what the town has to offer. Why not try some new food, take a wander through the shrines, or go try out the onsens!

A few other suggestions around Nozawa

  • Grab a toboggan and do a restaurant crawl over the resort. Always fun but take it easy on the grape and grain-
  • Cross country ski or snowshoe. Nice to see the mountains at a different speed!
  • Relax take a walk and enjoy one of the 30 restaurants, bars and cafes that Nozawa Onsen has to offer

Going big in the terrain park

PW3A1106-2

What a fantastic day it was yesterday. It was warm and sunny, and the winds were mild almost all day long. People were out in t shirts, jumpers, anime costumes, Though we’re yet to spot someone in shorts and a t-shirt! Maybe in Spring. One of the Kandahar courses was open yesterday and will be again today, a popular black run amongst our guests with stunning views over the village. Unfortunately with warm and sunny days there is the payoff of the snowpack becoming a bit slushy, though that didn’t stop anyone from enjoying the mountain.

Today’s forecast isn’t looking so bright, with some rain on the radar to fall during the day as temperatures hover at around 7° C. Things are looking like they will continue this way through until early Sunday before temperatures plummet back to -12° C and the rain turns to snow. There should be fairly consistent snowfalls for the first half of next week, with moderate amounts accumulating over a few days.

If you aren’t too keen to head out riding today, there’s plenty to do around the village. A few suggestions include:
– Going for an Onsen Crawl; you can collect a stamp book from the post office and upon visiting them all you will receive your own onsen towel.
– There is also the Ski Museum located in the village with memorabilia and history of the skiing culture in Japan.

Waking up to another bluebird day in Nozawa!

by Mark on February 12, 2016

Base at top: 205 cm

Temp at Top: 2 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira: 155 cm

New Snow since close: 0 cm

Weather: Sunny, warmer temperatures and calm winds.

PW3A0899

Yesterday was unreal. There’s nothing we love more than powder on a bluebird day, and Nozawa delivered us exactly that.

The skies are once again a beautiful shade of blue this morning, and the snow a pristine white. Today’s looking fantastic. We recommend keeping the thermals at home today, with temperatures rising to 2° Celsius. The pistes are going to be perfect today. Fresh snow is still hanging around, and there shouldn’t be too many people up on the mountain.

Temperatures will continue to rise, though thankfully the rain that is forecast for tomorrow has been decreased multiple times in the last few days. Hopefully the same happens tomorrow on the day. Temperatures will return to the negative double -digit readings we like to see by Monday, and we should see heavy snow falling then. Just what we want!
