Yesterday we saw one of the best days out on the slopes this season. After receiving a dump of 35cm in time for the opening of the lifts, there was some great powder to be found. The sun started to make an appearance by about 10am and stayed out for the whole day. A few runs were opened, a favourite amongst all being Skyline.
Snow is falling heavily in Nozawa Onsen at the moment; It should continue throughout the day to keep the groomers refreshed. Conditions on piste will be fast and soft thanks to the great lot of snow yesterday and the cold temperatures. The mercury will be sitting at around -7 halfway up the mountain and -10 up the top. Winds are going to be mild to moderate so the windchill may be a factor.
Looking ahead, it looks like another system is beginning to form and move across towards Nozawa Onsen with some more good dumps for the weekend. Temperatures should drop Saturday afternoon before snow starts to dump right down to the village. The freezing level will stay at 0m so heavy snow will be falling across the whole mountain through Sunday.
Yesterday’s powder day has got us excited for the next one. Let’s hope the skies deliver!
A quiet day on the slopes yesterday meant fresh tracks for everyone. The snow to skier/boarder ratio was at an all time high for the season. Our guests made the most of the conditions. The snow was moist but fast and there were some decent soft sections. Winds were blowing quite strongly up at Yamabiko so the more protected runs like Uenotaira and Yunomine were more popular.
Today we’re looking at blue skies for the morning before the skies cloud over in the afternoon and start to drop some more of the good stuff Temperatures will be much lower so the snow will stay a whole lot dryer. There’s still some heavy snow to come, with some predicted for this evening through all of Wednesday. Snowfalls will be heaviest in the middle of the day tomorrow and winds will once again be blowing strong.
Yesterday was a beautiful day on the slopes. With some light snow cover from the night before, the pistes were smooth and fast. The skies were cloudy but visibility was great almost the whole day. 16 of our lifts were open and we’re hoping to open the last couple after some heavy snow which should be falling soon.
Temperatures are higher than recently, with the maximum for today sitting just above zero. Don’t mistake these warm temperatures for a lack of snow; There’ll be a nice top up of a bit over 10cm coming down today followed by similar light snow on Tuesday, and then a nice heavy dump on Wednesday. We’ve all got our fingers crossed that the forecast doesn’t let us down; this could be the one! Gale winds are blowing across Nozawa. Winds will be particularly strong up the top of the mountain, so face and neck warmers seem to be the dress code today!
The base up the top continues to accumulate thanks to some fresh snow yesterday. We’re now sitting at a depth of one metre at Uenotaira and 105cm at the summit of Mt. Kenashi. It’s looking like this will increase considerably over the coming week, with consistent snowfall predicted throughout the week. A few heavier dumps are expected during the week too so keep an eye out for some new terrain being opened!
The Freezing level will be dropping today down to our altitude down here in the village, with a nice 5cm dusting of snow predicted in the evening. Judging by the snowcams and the view out the window from where I write this, the skies are going to be blue today though possibly overcast at times, with temperatures not exceeding -5 degrees. Yesterday was pretty chilly on the slopes and factoring in the wind chill it could get quite cold again today.
A few days ago a group of skiers went missing in Nozawa Onsen. Thankfully they were found safely. Let this be a reminder of the risks of going outside the resort boundaries and to make the right decisions.
What a great success. The Fire Festival, one of the yearly highlights at Nozawa Onsen took place last night and brought hundreds of locals and foreigners alike. The festivities began a couple of hours after finishing up a beautiful day on the slopes, and continued late into the night. The blue skies turned into a clear and cold night, filled with light and smoke.
For those of you who’ll be up on the slopes today, there are a couple centimetres of fresh snow on the pistes and more will be coming down throughout the day. We’re expecting some good snow to start falling soon, particularly on Monday and Wednesday. Winds will be strong mid next week so it would be wise to layer up, windchill will be reaching -27 degrees.
A big thank you to everyone who made the Fire Festival possible, It’s a spectacle each year and something that everyone will remember! Arigatou Gozaimashita
