With the Fire Festival taking place tonight, excitement around Nozawa Onsen has reached a boiling point. The men will be finishing the construction of the shrine by lunch, in time for the festivities to kick off at 7pm.
The excitement doesn’t stop there; We’re predicting some fantastic snow falls over the coming week. From Monday onwards a cold system will be dropping some snow for us. Snowfalls will be heaviest on the Wednesday, and gale winds will be blowing on Tuesday night. Freezing levels will be hovering below the village altitude so we should be getting some good dumps right down to the base of the mountain. This storm is still a couple of days away and could still shift. Let’s hope it does so in our favour!

Conditions up on the slopes today should be fairly nice, with some light snow refreshing all the pistes. It’ll be cold once again and there’s a chance of some snow in the afternoon.

A reason to celebrate at Nozawa Onsen

by Mark on January 14, 2016

Temp at Top; -9 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira  90 cm

New Snow since close: 0 cm

Weather; snowing!

With the fire festival starting to kick into gear, and with a forecast like this, there’s no reason not to be excited.

We’ve recently been somewhat deprived of the usual heavy snow we’re familiar with at Nozawa, but it seems that the waiting game could soon be over. We should see some light snowfalls to finish off the week, followed by heavy snowfalls to start the new week. Powder is coming to Nozawa! Winds will be strong after the weekend, bringing the windchill right down to -26 at times… but those cold temperatures mean that the snow will stay lighter and fluffier, and that it will hold solid once it landed

Yesterday saw the initial preparations for the Fire Festival, which will be taking place on Friday. Over today and tomorrow the locals will be building the shrine using traditional techniques; no nails or screws, just twine and rope. There’s lots happening around town so be sure to get involved!

New Snow since close: 2 cm

Weather;  Clear morning, cloudy afternoon

Although we haven’t been getting as much snow as we would like, the on piste conditions at Nozawa Onsen have been fairly good recently, and on a day like today, there’s no reason not to get out there. The day will start off with blue skies in every direction before some light cloud rolls in later in the day. We should be receiving a bit of snow overnight and then some more tomorrow to give the slopes a nice top up.

The forecast for the coming week is looking great. After what should be a sunny weekend, we might be getting heavy snow for a few days in a row from Monday onwards. The forecast is indication that a heavy storm should be moving in at some point on monday and start dropping snow across the whole of Nozawa Onsen.

With the Fire Festival coming in two days, preparations are well underway. You may have seen a few shrines built around town already. Check out the preparations of the main shrine today starting at 1pm at the base of Kandahar, near Hikage Gondola.

The big job of dragging the trees down for the Fire Festival begins today!

The big job of dragging the trees down for the Fire Festival begins today!

Today will see the men of the Village in their “Bad Luck” Years aged 25 and 42 drag the huge logs down from the Forest and thru the Village to the ceremony grounds. Fuelled with camaraderie and lots of Sake it is a spectacle to watch.
Then along with other villagers they will set about building the shrine within a 48 hour limit to be ready for the Festival to take place on the 15th of January.
The dragging begins at the bottom of the Kandaha Race Course at about 1pm then past Hikage and Nagasaka Gondolas then down thru the village.
Be sure to go along, cheer them on and check it out
Here is a link to more info on the festival and times for the big night.

Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival

Stay safe and enjoy this special event.

The result of 48 Hours of sheer man power and passion a beautiful shrine that will only stand for 24 hours for the Fire Festival

Fresh blue sky morning at Nozawa Onsen.

by Mark on January 12, 2016

Base at top:  105 cm

Temp at Top; -9 Degrees

Base at Uenotaira  95 cm

New Snow since close: 1 cm

Weather; some blue skies right now but snow on its way.

PW3A5443After consistent snowfall throughout yesterday and during the night, the mountain should be nice and fresh for a beautiful day of riding. Thanks to the extra cover, a few new runs are open including  Utopia and Ushikubi. The Nozawa Onsen team were hard at work yesterday preparing parts of the mountain and shaping the halfpipe so hopefully we see some more of the mountain opening soon.

Unfortunately the forecast has been downgraded from our original predictions for the week. There will still be light snow showers on and off throughout the week and the snowpack should be holding solid with temperatures hovering at around the -7 degree mark for the week. The start of next week is looking hopefulwith a heavy storm coming our way. Let’s hope it brings the goods!
