Birds eye view of Nozawa Onsen

by Mark on December 6, 2015

Looks like we have had another bit of a dusting up top in Nozawa overnight with the trees up top a nice white haze this morning.

For anyone wanting a birds eye view of the current conditions in Nozawa it does not get much better than this footage taken yesterday from above! Seiji san arigatou ne.

As you can see lots of white up there so although there is not enough for the powers to be to open the lifts we hopefully have a bit of a base to get us started once we get another good dump.

The guys that went to Ryuoo Park for a ski yesterday had a ball, just the one beginner run open but good for anyone new to the sport and wanting a taste of the winter rush.

The forecast looks like clear skies the next few days, which is nice if you are going to the beach, but for us some stormy winter weather would have been welcomed! Anyway please enjoy the views for now…

Ski Resort not yet open in Nozawa Onsen

by Mark on December 5, 2015

Up top temps are cold but not enough white stuff for the lifts to roll as yet

Up top temps are cold but not enough white stuff for the lifts to roll as yet

There is a saying in town that if it snows well 3 times up the top of the mountain then it will snow and settle in the Village. So hopefully the next dump will be a keeper. Still some light snow on the ground in town but don’t think it will last.

Had a few families from Queensland arrive and it was snowing pretty heavy when they got in. For some of the kids it was the first time they have seen snow so were wrapped to throw a few snowballs and have a play.Up top things are looking nice and white with pretty cold temps up top the snow we had has held well. But still not enough for the resort to give the green light on opening today. They ran the Gondola for a while yesterday so gave it a good look but with only about 25cm up top it is not a go as yet. They will open as soon as can so please keep those feet moving.

The forecast is looking like some clear skies this week and another cold front arriving late next week. A group of guests from Villa Nozawa have headed of to Ryuoo Park today to ski. Ryuoo Park is a higher elevation with the top at 1930m and they also have snow machines so have a 1400m beginner run open to slide. With awesome views it should be a good alternative until Nozawa gets going.

Kids love any sort of snow. An ice race in Onsen water always fun.

Snow on the way today in Nozawa

by Mark on December 3, 2015

About this time last season we were battling Mother Nature to keep our heads above the powder! Hope will repeat again.

About this time last season we were battling Mother Nature to keep our heads above the powder! Hope will repeat again.

After a few warmer days looks like the temps are set to drop today and some snow falls expected from this afternoon and into tomorrow.

The big question is will it be enough for the resort to open up? Will have to wait and see what the powers to be decide but would say will be marginal.

After that there is some beautiful sunshine on the menu which is always nice and will help the locals get in the rest of the crops and get set up for the season ahead but would be good to see a big dump like we had around December 7th last season soon – see the photo attached. Things can change pretty quickly in the mountains though so not too worried yet.

The huge Cedar trees not far from Nozawa make you appreciate the power of Nature

The huge Cedar trees not far from Nozawa make you appreciate the power of Nature

Grey skies hovering over the Village in Nozawa today and not a lot to report on the snow front. They were expecting a little up top but hard to tell if it arrived as the top is shrouded in fog.

Yesterday was a picture perfect day with lots of blue skies and sunshine. With the lifts not in operation yet a few of the gang here were keen to go on a hike into some snow country. They set off to nearby Mt Izuna and the Togakushi area.

Deep in the forest there is an Inner Shrine, which is located 2km along an impressive route lined with huge cedar trees that are hundreds of years old. They say you can feel the power of nature here and those trees certainly make you feel pretty small. Thanks to Angelica for the great photo.

Sun breaking thru the clouds in Nozawa

Bit of a white delight on the slopes in Madarao across from Nozawa

Bit of a white delight on the slopes in Madarao across from Nozawa

Clearing to be a beautiful day here. Had another nice little dusting up top last night and can see the white rug rolling down Madarao Ski Resort across the valley this morning while I drink my coffee. It rained in the village last night so was not cold enough to produce any snow but up high here there is also some sprinklings in the trees.
Tomorrow is still looking like a bit more of a snow show and temps are dropping with strong winds from the west. The long range forecast is looking better from Thursday next week at this stage but is early days will keep you posted.
