Another warm sunny start to the day here in Nozawa Onsen. Temps are really getting up there with all this sunshine so some great T Shirt spring skiing weather on offer.
Still very quiet on the slopes but with the Golden Week set of holidays kicking off tomorrow there should be quite a few people drifting into the village from tonight.
Amazingly the resort still has top to bottom skiing on offer on the beginner Forest trail but most of the lower courses are pretty sparse on cover now.
All this warm weather has brought on the Sakura or Cherry Blossoms and they are in full bloom now in and around Nozawa Onsen. Iiyama is a pretty cool place for some Hanami action and no better way to spend an afternoon that sitting under the Cherry blossom trees with a few friends and having a quiet drink. Special time of the year to be in the mountains so come on up and enjoy the skiing and the blossoms!
Web cam shot of Yamabiko this morning get the Tshirt on it is going to be a lovely spring day
There is some intense fog hovering in the low valleys this morning. This is usually the result of rainfalls, which had intensified into the afternoon yesterday giving a somewhat tropical feel to the area. Luckily at the moment the areas above around 1000 meters are bathed in sunshine as the peaks soar above the low lying cloud. Today the skiing and boarding will be good on piste in the upper areas of the mountain, it will be fairly fast as it always is after rain.
Looking at the forecast ahead we have seen some improvements in the overnight updates. Snow will fall above 1400 meters later tonight becoming warm and sunny by tomorrow. Some isolated light showers may pass overhead on Thursday night but expect these to be short in duration. Light flurries are then possible on Friday above 1500 meters. Clear days are looking likely until Monday at least in the long range.
After a severe onslaught of soil hydration yesterday afternoon the much maligned precipitation has eased off overnight and we are currently faced with overcast by dry weather. Like yesterday, it will be best to make the most of the conditions earlier as rainfalls are expected to make a reappearance at some point today. Regarding snow conditions the resort runs will be wet and slushy, but fast. Best on the groomed runs. The upper areas of the mountain are holding up very well given the conditions.
Tomorrow snow is forecast the fall on the resort peaks above around 1400 meters. Following this, Thursday will be clear and sunny before snow showers resume on Friday and Saturday. This next system will be slightly colder than tomorrows with snow falling down to around 1000 meters. Early next week looks to be extremely variable at this stage and difficult to pin down an accurate prediction.
Japan is an amazing country to visit any time of the year. But Spring has to be one of my favourite times. Things are waking up, cherry blossoms are on show, temps are perfect and you can even get some skiing in! Here is a great clip that catches a lot of exploring Japan
After an amazing sunny spring day yesterday we now have some cloudy but dry conditions across the region. Today it will be best to make the most of this weather by hitting the slopes early as there is some precipitation of the liquid form forecast to build later in the day. Before this occurs there will be some superb spring riding on offer with positive temperatures the snow will be soft and playful. Although the snow in the lowlands is melting fast the higher are loaded and ready for continued spring sessions into the distant future.
According to the forecast we will have a few days of rain with the potential for some snowfalls about the peaks on Wednesday. The second half of this week looks like it will be back to spring sunshine with great weather predicted for about five days in a row commencing on Thursday.
