Snowy Conditions Return

Weather; Isolated snow showers

Fifteen centimetres of the good stuff has fallen across the resort last night and we have patches of blue sky. Today is going to be a good day. Make sure you head up to Yamabiko to slash and spray some fine white japow; or try out one of the long winding groomers for silky smooth carving action. Be sure to rug up with an extra layer to protect yourself against the cold windy conditions! An unstable ice layer is something to watch out for off piste as are the dreaded death cookies in gully run outs. Anyone heading off piste should be competent in mitigating these hazards.

Unfortunately we did have some rain yesterday but the good news is the base held up very well and any damage is unnoticeable. With both gondolas on wind hold almost all day it really was a day best spent resting and recovering.

Looks like the forecast has taken a turn in the right direction overnight and we are in for an impressive run of snow and cold weather for the next week at least. Snow showers are predicted for every day this week with the highest totals over the weekend. We should expect about 10-15cm to fall every day.

A good rest day

Base at bottom; 200 cm

New Snow since close: 0 cm

Weather; Overcast

Warm prefrontal temperatures and cloud is what we see when we look out the window this morning in Nozawa Onsen. Luckily this southerly inflow will be short-lived as a cold front is forecast to make an impact over the region later tonight delivering snow and very cold temperatures. High traffic groomers will be the pick of the runs today which will offer the fastest snow conditions.

Yesterday saw very interesting atmospheric conditions and quality snow on the upper North facing slopes. An inversion layer had trapped air pollution blown in from the south to create a thick valley fog and clear upper skies. The Japanese Alps were piercing through the inversion layer in a very photogenic manner indeed.

According to the forecast snowfalls should increase tonight becoming lighter into tomorrow. Around 20cm is expected. Isolated light to moderate falls are then forecast to continue well into the foreseeable future, Saturday at least.

Moody Monday Morning

Base at bottom; 215 cm
New Snow since close: 1 cm
Weather; Overcast

Its a moody Monday morning here in the village of Nozawa Onsen. Mixed clouds are swirling about the valleys and the peaks creating an atmosphere thick with moisture. Light snowfalls fell yesterday afternoon and night but the totals were not significant with 1cm recorded.

The mountain became markedly quieter yesterday as most of the Japanese holiday makers returned home. Gone are the morning gondola lines we have been experiencing as of late. Today will be a day to pick out those carving skis and boards and giving the legs a work out of face paced top to bottom groomers. Also worth a look today will be the newly constructed park. Check it out!

The freezing level is set to make significant rises by the afternoon, up to around 2000 meters, and remain there until tomorrow. Some rain is expected on the lower slopes which will help iron out the small ice balls or death cookies that have formed on some of the run outs. By tomorrow afternoon a cold front is forecast with snow and very cold temperatures predicted on and off all week.

Epic Conditions Continue

Weather; Overcast

A bit of a grey old morning today in the village of Nozawa Onsen as high clouds pass over the resort. Moderate temperatures are expected and the clouds are expected to deliver the occasional light snowfall isolated across the region. Hit the powder early today to avoid the weekend crowds and the groomers and park will be worth a look as holiday makers break for lunch.

Yesterday continues on the trend this year of epic days. Light dry powder snow was abundant across the resort and the powder hounds certainly sniffed out these areas with no lack of pace. Lighting conditions were mostly flat until the afternoon when we saw occasionally sunny conditions and the sunset had to be seen to be believed. A good day all round.

Isolated snowfalls will increase tonight falling above about 500 meters. Small totals are forecast but the wind is expected to be NW so we may be in for a surprise tomorrow morning. Unfortunately a warm front will move over the region tomorrow and tuesday but it will be short-lived with very cold temperatures and snowfalls resume Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Magic Foot Delivers

Base up top: 370 cm    Temp Top; -9 Degrees

Base at bottom; 240 cm

New Snow since close: 30 cm

Weather; Snow

Well, after yesterdays clear blue skies no one was really expecting another hefty fall of snow to occur. But Nozawa Onsen has its surprises. Late last night snow laden clouds marched over from the sea of Japan delivering the goods. 30cm of fresh stuff has blanketed the resort and the powder hounds are frothing at the mouth once more. It remains to be seen whether today will be another bluebird, but at this stage clouds and light snow continue to pass over Nozawa Onsen.

Again, there will be great riding to be had across the board today. Yamabiko trees will be on as usual as will the Challenge area. Groomers will be the pick by the afternoon but for now its all about hunting the powder. Remember to always ski with a buddy to haul you out when you stack in the depths.

Snowfalls are set to clear at some point this afternoon but further light snowfalls to higher elevations are expected tomorrow. Clear weather and warmer temperatures are expected on Monday before another cold front is due on Tuesday afternoon providing yet more fresh snow.
