The Green Season in Nozawa Onsen.
Summer in Nozawa is always an amazing feeling. Everything is so green and lush. It is such a contrast to the white of the Winter months. With rich volcanic soil and an abundance of water flowing from the natural springs everything grows like wild flowers. Hard to believe but for the local population Farming is probably as important a livelihood as tourism from the magnificent skiing! Many families in town are almost self sufficient growing rice, a wide variety of vegetables and even picking wild mountain vegetables too. For the outdoor adventurer there are lots of fun activities on the menu
Mountain Biking – the main Nagasaka Gondola is open from mid July to the end of August and there are some challenging off road tracks to fly down
Hiking – the mountains you ski on are also beautiful to explore. With waterfalls, scenic views, pretty flowers and even some wild life.
Rafting and Paddle boarding – the Chikuma river in the valley gets some amazing run off from the snow melt and can get a serious flow in places. Lots of magnificent lakes nearby too for a paddle or a fish!
Sports like Tennis, Soccer, Golf and even Skate boarding. Nozawa has courts and fields and parks to enjoy them all
Onsen – then at the end of the day nothing better to rest the weary muscles than a long soak in one of the many peaceful Onsens in the Village most of which are free to use!
Our houses and Lodges are open for most of the Green season from May until November and we do some great deals at almost Half Price of the ski season. So grab some friends or just some quiet time and consider a trip up to the Nozawa and some fresh mountain air.
Greetings from the Green Room. Kyoko looking for a waterfall or a lost ski!
Can never grow tired of those sunsets over the snow covered peaks. Thanks to everyone for another great season in Nozawa
And so the Sun sets on another terrific ski season in Nozawa Onsen. As one of my neighbours said to me in the Onsen one night the snow fell very skillfully!
We did not have so many of those monster 100cm overnight dumps this season but instead a constant stream of 30cm type falls, “ The Magic Foot”. Making for excellent conditions and more bluebird starts than I can remember for a while!
I had so many people this season say to me “ That was the best days skiing of my life!” Some very seasoned campaigners too, so always great to hear. Our photos throughout the season here would confirm I think you would agree.
A big Thank you to Shaun for all his amazing images that graced the reports, a true natural behind the lens. Also want to take this opportunity to thank all the awesome Nozawa Holidays Staff this season. A great mix of nationalities, ages and snow equipment! Think they had a lot of fun and know they made all our guests holidays enjoyable and memorable.
Thanks and otsukaresama to all the restaurant, shop and bar staff in the village too for as always, providing amazing service and food to all the guests and putting up with some very average Japanese skills!
Our biggest thanks goes to all of you the guests that visited Nozawa Onsen this season. It was a pleasure having you in our small town and we really hope you enjoyed your stay and we will see you back again soon.
A special thanks to all of the repeat guests too. Some of them have been up to stay with us for as much as 9 times now and many multiple times and they just keep coming back! We genuinely appreciate the business and even more so the great friendship.
Of course Nozawa is still a great place to visit during the “Green Season” with hiking, mountain biking, onsens and great food. Farming is in full swing so plenty of fresh produce. Our lodges and houses are open so if keen to see Nozawa in a different light please drop us an email.
Otherwise we look forward to welcoming you back next winter. Busy times are filling fast as always so we look forward to hearing from you.
Until then stay safe and arigatou gozaimashita from everyone in Nozawa.

The end to another great season that goes for 5 months in Nozawa
Base up top; 185cm
Weather; Sunshine
Lots of people flowing into town for Golden Week festivities and last turns for a while. The Cherry Blossoms are out in force in the valley but still some fun spring skiing up top with a 185cm base remaining. Not a bad number to finish on!
Nozawa Central Lodge and Nozawa House are still open so come and see Luke, Gab, Kyoko and the gang for a coffee or a comfy bed and enjoy the end of what has been a terrific season.
This weekend is also the last for Buna, will miss the Nan Curry.
The hard working Ueno Family took their first day off during the season in 27 years this year to celebrate the birth of thier Grandkids at the Fire Festival. A big otsukaresama and already looking forward to December when the ski season kicks off again in Nozawa.
Hope to see you all there!
Everybody loves Buna on the slopes at Paradise in Nozawa Onsen.
The Ski Tour is more about the climb than the ride. But can imagine the drop on that peak in the back…
Base up top: 300 cm
Temp Top; 3 Degrees
Base at Uenotaira 210cm
New Snow since close: 0 cm
Weather; Sunny
Have had a couple of nice days in Nozawa with plenty of sunshine and fun conditions. As we do most years we went for a ski tour for a few days. This time to Mt Hiuchi just behind Mt Myoko. We look at this mountain range most days from Nozawa but now after climbing it we will look at it in a different way.
Was an amazing tour and will post a few shots. The weather was perfect, still lots of snow and the scenery second to none.
In Nozawa temps are set to drop a but today and we may see some light snow fall up high. Then lots more glorious sunshine for the rest of the week. Have to love spring…
