A fine ultra clear morning in Nozawa Onsen. Not a cloud in the sky and with a decent top up of fresh powder on the upper half of the mountain over the past 24 hours. Yamabiko area will be the top pick today for intermediate to advanced riders. The trees will offer some nice powder turns whilst the groomed runs will be smooth and fast. Beginners should find the greatest level of enjoyment in the Paradise area with a smooth consistent surface.
Yesterday was surprisingly good. Later in the afternoon when a greater depth had collected the Yamabiko trees offered some mostly untracked boot deep powder. Lower runs were hard and mostly fast, challenging for beginners and boarders but for those on narrower skis were able to lay down some strong carves.
We have an impressive forecast for the next week or so. Looks like the region will collect some substantial falls starting from tomorrow. The freezing level will decrease from around 1000m back to sea level by Thursday morning and moderate snowfalls will continue until Friday, becoming light over the weekend. Winds will remain moderate to strong over this time. In the long range another strong system looks possible for early next week.
We woke this morning in Nozawa to some occasional undersized flakes however since then snowfalls have progressed and we now have some decent moderate snow falling from the sky. Riding today will be dust on crust conditions with the fresh falling on a firm base layer. Best areas will be the well groomed pistes as the off piste runs have a severe death cookie layer.
Yesterday was better for riding on the lower pistes. A heavy fog enveloped the upper slopes limiting visibility but lower down was better. Light isolated snow fell about the peak for most of the day but no significant falls were recorded.
Looks like we have a decent forecast for most of the week. Moderate snowfalls are expected on Wednesday into Friday with the best quality snow falling on Thursday and Friday. Freezing level of around 0m is expected during this time.
After a long spell with no new snowfalls finally the drought has broken with 5cm of fresh recorded up high, 2cm in the village. The tree runs will be refreshed in the upper areas and will be well worth a look today. The groomed runs will be smooth and soft with the new layer of snow. Temperatures are -4C at the peak and are expected to drop to around -10C in the next 24 hours. Winds are light.
Last night the annual lantern festival went off in the Hikage area. The free sake was flowing and for those who endured the light drizzle were rewarded with a spectacular fireworks show and drumming performance.
The skiing and boarding yesterday was better than the preceding few days. Soft but fast spring conditions opened some of the tree runs once again and the groomed runs were a treat for carving. Light drizzle persisted for much of the day in the village however this fell as snow on the upper three quarters of the mountain.
Looks like we should expect some good snow conditions over the next week. Forecast is light snow showers, which will continue today and into tomorrow. With a steadily dropping temperature its likely that there will be some powder on offer for tomorrow. Tuesday will be clear. Further snow will move over the region on Wednesday night so Thursday and Friday will offer some great skiing and boarding; a return to winter conditions.
Its a very atmospheric morning in Nozawa Onsen this morning. Low clouds are circulating around the valleys and peaks giving the place a really Jurassic feel. Temperatures have cooled slightly in comparison to the past couple of days with negatives from mid mountain up. Again, the best riding today will be the groomed runs which will be icy up top, softening further down on the mountain.
Yesterday saw some nice riding on the groomed runs below the fog. It was fast up top with temperatures below freezing and slushy on the lower pistes. Off piste was not the best but the natural half pipes at Yamabiko were good with the right goggle lens.
We expect temperatures to continue to cool today and tomorrow with the freezing level dropping back to sea level by tomorrow afternoon. Snow showers are expected tonight and into tomorrow. Monday will likely be clear before another snow bearing system moves over the region on Wednesday night.
Its a damp morning in Nozawa Onsen this morning. We received some precipitation overnight to which the cover has held up better than expected. If your up for some skiing today the groomed runs will be your best bet, especially those on the upper slopes. Head to areas of higher traffic levels which will have the fastest snow conditions. Luckily these warm conditions should gradually subside over the coming days.
Yesterday was very similar to what we have today. Fortunately the rain held off for most of the day but the flat sections were slow in combination with the very warm temperatures. Steeper areas that had been skied more frequently held snow that was somewhat faster and as a result were the better areas for skiing and boarding.
According to the forecast we should expect plenty of snow over the coming week. The freezing level will drop to around 1000m by tomorrow resulting in snow across the upper areas of the mountain. The freezing level will drop back to 0m by late Monday next week and snow is forecast across this period. Further ahead, a solid dump is possible around Wednesday night.
