An overcast morning in Nozawa Onsen with high cloud moving in overnight. Temperatures are positive across the mountain so conditions will be slushy from the outset. Today the pick will be the groomed runs which will be smooth but forgiving with the soft snow. The park and pipe will be good to hit today with a magnanimous surface absorbing any mistakes. Some liquid precipitation is a possibility this afternoon so make sure to wear extra waterproof gear on the mountain.
Yesterday was a great day of spring-like skiing. Temperatures were quite warm so again the snow was slushy but forgiving. Glorious sunshine lasted all day long, there were many sunburnt red faces coming down the mountain during the afternoon! The natural half pipe was in fine form at Yamabiko.
The freezing level will reach it peak today and make a gradual decline over the next few days. As alluded to earlier it looks like we will get some resin later today, but it will likely turn to snow at upper elevations by early tomorrow morning. Light snow will continue until Sunday at which point the freezing level will drop to around 300m asl and skies will mostly clear.
A classic bluebird morning in Nozawa. A slight haze is enveloping the lower valleys but the peaks are soaring through into a cloudless crystalline atmosphere. The on piste skiing will be sensational this morning with fast ultra smooth groomers. Later in the afternoon all areas but Yamabiko will become slightly slushy with warming temperatures giving way to soft and playful riding. Later in the day the park and pipe will be good fun. Off piste conditions are variable and packed depending on aspect.
Yesterday saw heavily isolated light snow showers continue for much of the morning before gradually decreasing during the late afternoon. A moderate breeze blew in some nice stashes which collected in leeward areas for the last runs. The off piste skiing was ok but really it was a day for the groomed runs which remained very smooth well into the afternoon. It was really great to let the skis and boards run with the knowledge you wouldn’t get thrown off by unexpected ruts and bumps. The Yamabiko groomers were especially nice.
According to weather predictions we are at the beginning of a brief spike into spring like temperatures with the freezing level rising to around 2000m tomorrow. Unfortunately this may be accompanied by some precipitation tomorrow afternoon and night. But luckily this warm spell is only short lived with temperatures nosediving again on Friday into the weekend. All next week we should expect freezing winter conditions in combination with snowfalls, heaviest over the weekend and mid next week.
Isolated snow showers are passing over Nozawa Onsen this morning delivering a dusting of fresh across the pistes. These passing showers should continue for most of the day before clearing later tonight. The pick today will be the groomed runs, which will be soft and fast at the top and hard and fast on the lower elevation pistes. Most areas of powder have become tracked however there are still a few discontinuous patches adjacent to trees, good for one or two turns.
Yesterday saw fine weather persist for the duration. There were still some nice powder runs if you knew where to look, but really the pistes were the place to be. They remained very smooth and fast with low crowd levels. Temperatures warmed during the afternoon softening the lower runs.
Tomorrow marks the beginning of a brief spike in temperatures with the freezing level rising to around 2000m in conjunction with clear skies. Thursday should see some clouds roll over and unfortunately there is the possibility of rain. On Friday temperatures will most likely gradually drop with light snow showers moving over the region. The freezing level will gradually decline back to around 0m, at this stage by Sunday.
Its another full bluebird morning in Nozawa Onsen. Light winds, low temperatures and good snow. Look to the West for potential views of the Sea of Japan, and of course the surrounding Japan Alps that inspire ski and snowboard touring adventures. Much of the remaining powder snow became tracked out yesterday, apart from a few of the secret localities. Unless you know where these are the best riding will be the groomed runs and park today.
Yesterday was a great day for exploring. Fine clear weather inspired confidence and many great runs were found amongst the trees. Obvious areas became tracked by mid morning and most people retreated to the groomers for some carving action. Apart from a few scattered clouds surrounding the peak, fine clear weather remained for most of the day.
We may experience some very isolated snow showers tomorrow afternoon but apart from that we will have clear bluebird conditions until Thursday afternoon. Temperatures will gradually warm during this time to a peak freezing level of 2000m. Thursday night is showing the possibility of rain, which will turn to snow Friday morning when the freezing level drops. In the long range forecast cold temperatures and snow should continue from Friday until at least Tuesday next week.
Another picture perfect morning in Nozawa Onsen today. Clear cloudless skies are providing great views across the valley, its sure to be a fine day on the hill. Since last lifts yesterday we have had another unexpected 5cm fall across most of the resort, just enough to fill in yesterdays tracks and provide some sweet fresh lines.
Again, the best riding earlier will be in the Yamabiko area, which is very beautiful at the moment with heavily snow laden trees. As the day progresses and the sun takes hold head to the north facing slopes which will retain the best snow quality. The park and pipe will also be worth a look during the afternoon. Make the most of the fresh powder while it lasts, we are due for a break in snowfalls for a few days.
Yesterday was very similar to what we have today. Partly cloudy skies cleared by mid morning coupled with the powder that fell the night before ensured there was some excellent skiing and boarding on offer. Trees runs were great in the morning and during the afternoon the groomers were prime for some fast paced carves or mellow cruising.
As suggested earlier we will experience a break in snowfalls for at least the next half week or so with mostly fine clear weather forecast. Temperatures will remain cold until Wednesday afternoon when a rise in the freezing level is suggested. This will peak at around 2000m on Thursday at this stage. Luckily this is just a brief event with temperatures declining again Friday into Saturday. We expected some light snowfalls during this time.
