Snow keeps building in Nozawa

Sorry for the late report today took us a while to dig out the car this morning
We may have snuck out for a powder run too!
Simply put amazing conditions in Nozawa at the moment

There was 50cm of fresh snow on parts of the mountain again overnight and some of the runs were chest deep powder this morning

Predictions were for light snow today but there are still huge flakes falling outside, the sun is trying to poke through so may be epic later today and then looking like sunshine tomorrow

Just a small break before a heavy dump expected on Saturday night for the Fire Festival. We had about 1 meter overnight last year on the same date so may be a repeat performance this year.

Preparations begin today on the slopes of Hikage as the trees to build the shrine get dragged down the hill.

Anyway best get back up there or on the shovel, snow waits for no man

Snow Show continues in Nozawa Onsen

by Mark on January 10, 2011

Blue Bird Yamabiko Nozawa a few days ago by Micheal Hill

New Snow 20cm
Base at Yamabiko 240cm

The Snow Show continues in Nozawa Onsen
At around midnight last night could see the stars so thought we were in for a bluebird morning

However the snow was falling pretty heavy in town this morning and has continued.
The forecast is for light snow so will be interesting to see if it eases through the day.

Yesterday was an amazing powder day on the mountain with some big smiles and sore legs coming down in the afternoon. Crowds also started to thin out and today should see a lot less people around with the long weekend over
Enjoy the few quieter days and great snow as with the Fire Festival coming up on the 15th things are set to get pretty busy on the slopes and in town.

Preparations begin on the 13th with the villagers dragging the trees down the slopes past Hikage to begin construction of the shrine.

The sake will be flowing like the water thru the streets and well worth checking out
Anyway that is in a few days for now it is all about the snow and lots of it so enjoy some powder time

Courses open:

All except the following
Kandahar
Hachiman
Uenotaira Half Pipe
Karasawa Wave Park

Heavens open in Nozawa – Powder awaits….

by Mark on January 10, 2011

Where's my car? January dump continues in Nozawa

New Snow- 60cm
Base at Yamabiko – 230cm

Lots of snow!

Not sure what other way to say it, has been snowing heavy all night and the official report is showing new snow of 50cm up top and a massive 65 cm at Uenotaira

We have smashed our way thru the 2m mark and the base up top is currently 230cm.
Everyone is clambering for powder boards and trying to get up and amongst the thick of it for what promises to be a very memorable day for the powder hounds.

On piste should have been groomed last night and have a nice soft layer of fresh snow on top.
Anyway grab the snorkel and go deep.

Outlook is for a bit of brief sun tomorrow morning followed by heavy snow again on Wednesday night.
The shovels will be working overtime to clear the roofs and roads

Anyone driving up or home after the long weekend should take it very easy on the roads
Lots of snow the graders were even clearing the heated roads in town this morning as they could not keep up!

Courses open:

All except the following
Kandahar
Hachiman
Uenotaira Half Pipe
Karasawa Wave Park

All lifts are open

Trading Sunshine for Snow in Nozawa

by Mark on January 9, 2011

Base of Nozawa Village looking at Myoko

Different scene here today in Nozawa with clouds covering the Village early
It is pretty cold with – 4 degrees showing on the mercury at the front door here in the Village
Heavy snow is forecast for later on today and it certainly has that feeling

Yesterday was the perfect start to the day with sunny skies and lots of snow.
A few people were complaining it was getting a bit icy later in the afternoon.
Think we have been spoilt by the last few days of epic powder.
Locals used the break in the snow to get some of the snow of the roofs before the next big dump

Was a busier day on the slopes yesterday but not as bad as thought
There was a long line at the end of the day for the Skyline connector lift, with everyone wanting the fast track down Skyline

Great festival in town last night with some amazing drumming and the sake was flowing
More powder days on the menu ahead

Happiness in Nozawa Onsen

by Mark on January 8, 2011

Bucketing snow in Nozawa where to put it all!

New Snow- 10cm
Base at Yamabiko – 190cm

Today is going to be one of those days in Nozawa.
Has been dumping consistently for 2 days and now the sun has come out.

It was getting deep yesterday and even heard the call of there being too much snow!
Tracks were getting filled quickly with the new snow and with no crowds was a great powder day

Today being Saturday and ideal conditions should see it pretty busy on the slopes
But just standing on the top and checking out the views will be inspiring

The forecast is for more of the same with a good dump tomorrow night followed by sunshine and another dump
Niko Niko Festival in Town tonight on Oyu Dori with some traditional drumming, parade and games should be a great vibe
The happiness is big in Nozawa…
