What a day on the mountain! After a week of non-stop snow we finally had a blue-bird day. The Villa Nozawa and Lodge Nagano staff were up there getting their share of the powder that was on offer. Check out some of the shots they took.

Blue Bird morning in Nozawa Onsen. After days of bucketing snow the Sun has finally emerged and looking amazing
There was 20cm of fresh up top overnight and with all the Holiday Crowd going home this could be the best day of the season so far
This photo was taken from one of the rooms at Villa Nozawa and shows the awesome views across the Valley. You can see a few of the nearby resorts from Nozawa Onsen
There are a number of decent resorts just a short drive from here including;
Togari Onsen – a small resort just across the Valley, it is lower than Nozawa so tends to have a shorter season but there is some great back country to explore
Kijimadaira – boasting one of the steepest runs in Japan and also credited with being the birth place of both snowboarding and paragliding in Japan this is not a huge place but can be interesting
Madarao Kogen – is a larger resort with 440 m of Vertical and 17 lifts it was pretty popular back in the hey days of early 90’s. It is pretty quiet now and dominated by a big hotel but still worth a look
Myoko Kogen – this is a larger collection of resorts 9 in total and gets a lot of snow. Suginohara and Akakura are the most popular
Shiga Kogen is also only about a 1 hour drive and is a massive area with a number of resorts and some great terrain
Having said this most people find that Nozawa Onsen resort just 100m above the Lodges has plenty to explore and enjoy on their stay here. Nozawa has an impressive 1085 meters of Vertical and over 700 acres of terrain. With some great on and off piste runs, two gondolas and 23 chair lifts.

With all this snow falling in Nozawa the guys have decided to put it to some good use besides gliding in it. They are moulding the ever growing pile of snow out the front of Villa Nozawa into a very cool Ice Bar.
Had a trial run opening tonight but the snow was still falling heavily so was called off after the first round. If Mother Nature reveals some stars tomorrow night we should see Happy Hour again!
Long term Guest Peter Crisp has been doing a bit of Ice Sculpting at the front of the bar and made an amazing Fire Breathing Dragon! It is sure to rival the creations at the Sapporo Snow Festival

Over past 36 hours Nozawa has been buried under 130cm of fresh dry Japanese powder. What a way to bring in the new year! Those trying to leave the town today will first be confronted with the task of locating and then digging out their cars (see today’s picture). Those hanging around will be lucky enough to experience some famous Japanese champagne powder.
Today should see a brief respite from the dumping snow, but only until this evening. With another 20cm expected overnight the snow shovels won’t get much of a rest.

Snow is absolutely bucketing in Nozawa Onsen at the moment. There must have been 40cm fall this morning in the carpark out the front of Villa Nozawa
Visibility was limited up top but for those that found the powder stashes it was heaven. The outlook is for the snow to continue getting heavier tonight so should be an amazing day on the Mountain tomorrow
