Nozawa Onsen Update

Party Time New Years Nozawa Style

Misty start to the day here in Nozawa with the sun poking thru the clouds. Snow forecast to start falling later today and heavy tonight.
Should make for a magic New Years at the Temples

Yesterday was a great day up the mountain with the fresh snow of the night before
The New Years crowd has arrived and the slopes and town are a buzz
Looking like a big weekend in Nozawa

Temps are just feeling colder in town finally with a decent amount of snow now settling on the ground
The late night stroll was pretty cold making the onsen even better
Looks like going to get really cold in a few days with around -20 degrees forecast up the top

Tonight at Nagasaka they will have night skiing from 16:30 – 23;30 with fireworks and free sake. There will be a countdown there too. On 1st January, they will be giving out free sake at Uenotaira. In the village, people will be making their way to the Temple where they will ring the bell 108 times very slowly. It usually starts from around 22:30.

The Big Snow Arrived in Nozawa

by Mark on December 30, 2010

Dumping In Nozawa

There were some big sighs of relief last night around the Onsen
The big dump we were waiting for has arrived.
Reports show about 50cm of fresh snow has fallen since this time yesterday

There were some good stashes of powder to be had around the resort yesterday
This dump should make it possible to ski top to bottom

The resort has opened more runs today but still more to come, the word on the slopes is all will be open from Saturday
There is a huge dump expected for tomorrow night New Years Eve with around another 50cm due
So looks like will be a very Happy New Year

Base up top at Yamabiko now at 130cm and counting

Nice cover next to Villa Nozawa

by Mark on December 28, 2010

Blue bird start to the day here with some awesome views across the Valley this morning
Nice conditions up top still light on down low

But the resort is pushing ahead opening some of the lower runs.
Probably in anticipation of the dump due tonight and the New Years rush of guests

The opened Utopia late yesterday afternoon for a while, reports were it was doable but could use some more snow
Today they have opened Challenger and Hikage slopes so something for everyone there

Enjoy the sunshine while it last as looks like will turn snowy from tonight with heavy snow predicted

New Years is not far away now and everyone is busy preparing their houses to welcome in the New Year. It is a bit like Christmas time in other countries and a wreath is put above the door as a Shinto symbol to clean the house for the new year. In Nozawa a Mikan or mandarin takes the centre piece
Hopefully the Gods will smile on us with some nice snow falls too

White Christmas in Nozawa Onsen

by Mark on December 25, 2010

Christmas Tree in Nozawa Onsen

Amazing how quickly the landscape can change in Nozawa Onsen
Christmas day was welcomed in with a beautiful blanket of white fluffy snow
Something special about a white christmas, enhanced with an onsen and a day on the slopes

The snow has been falling for over 24 hours now and pretty heavy at times
There has been almost another 20cm up top in places and looks set to continue the rest of today
Then a break for a day or two and a return of heavy snow fall

More lifts and courses have opened up now and can basically get to half the mountain
Hopefully the bottom half is not too far away

Temperatures are down to -10 degrees up top so better rug up

Winter arrives in Nozawa Onsen

by Mark on December 23, 2010

Nozawa Holidays Staff Welcome you to Nozawa Onsen

The skies are angry over Nozawa this morning with some serious thunder and lightning covering the village and surrounding mountains. The ground is white around the village at the moment but is mainly small hail

Good news snow has arrived with 20cm being reported up top.
Bad news you can’t get up there yet as lifts are on hold due to the lightning.

The weather should pass though and the resort will be looking at opening from 10am if the lifts are all ok.
Looks like there is a lot more snow on the way though so means there will be more time for it to build up.

Tomorrow is looking major on the snow front with over 50cm expected so should be a very white Christmas

Most of our staff for the coming season have arrived and we gathered for the Annual Staff Dinner at Mitsubachi Maya last night. It was an amazing feast served up by the Ikedas as always
We have gathered talented people from all over the globe to help make your ski holiday in Nozawa a memorable one and look forward to welcoming you soon
